Notre Dame football quarterback breakdown: Sam Hartman leads the pack, but who's up next?
SOUTH BEND — Two decades removed from his own record-setting career at Cincinnati, Gino Guidugli knows what he wants to see in his Notre Dame quarterback group.
Especially when it comes to displaying poise in the face of momentary setback.
“That’s what you want, absolutely,” said Guidugli, hired away from Wisconsin this offseason. “I don’t think you want them getting too high. When things go bad, you’ve got to be able to snap back and have a short memory.”
For Wake Forest graduate transfer Sam Hartman, who has thrown 41 interceptions along with 110 career touchdown passes, turning the page in practice or games shouldn’t be all that difficult.
It could, however, be more challenging for the untested trio of young quarterbacks behind him: redshirt freshman Steve Angeli (seven career game snaps), freshman Kenny Minchey and walk-on Dylan Devezin.
Gator Bowl MVP Tyler Buchner’s decision to transfer to Alabama rather than remain on call as Hartman’s primary backup and designated successor only adds to the importance of collective growth for Guidugli’s group.
Then again, Minchey, a four-star signee who had originally committed to Pittsburgh, was already modeling impervious behavior in his first spring practice.
“I think that’s just Kenny as a person,” Guidugli said. “I don’t think he’s very excitable. I don’t think he gets down about too much. He’s just kind of smooth sailing.”
The proof is in the wearable technology.
“If your baseline pulse is 60, Kenny’s doesn’t variate much,” Guidugli said. “It’s like 61 to maybe 59. He doesn’t get too high and he doesn’t get too low. He understands this is about him getting in there, getting reps, getting more comfortable, catching up to the speed of the game.”
