Warner Named to 2023 Maxwell Award Watch List
Although Warner began his true freshman season on the bench, perhaps no one in the country wanted the 2022 season to go on more than Warner. He threw for school records in attempts (63), completions (45), and yards (527) in the season finale vs. East Carolina becoming the first Temple quarterback to throw for 500 yards. He is also the first to have two 400-yard games in the same season and the first to have three 300-yard games in the same season. – AND HE DID IT ALL WITHIN 22 DAYS. He became just the second Owls' QB to top 3,000 passing yards with 3,028 (P.J. Walker had 3,295 in 2016). His completions (268) and attempts (443) set the school records for a single-season.
Warner joins five other American Athletic Conference players on the watch list – RB Jermaine Brown (UAB), QB Frank Harris (UTSA), QB Seth Hennigan (Memphis), RB Larry McCammon (FAU), and QB Michael Pratt (Tulane). Temple will face four players on the list in 2023 – Brown, Harris, Hennigan, and Akron's WR Alex Adams.
The Maxwell Award has been presented to the College Player of the Year since 1937 and is named in honor of Robert "Tiny" Maxwell who was a former standout at Swarthmore College and a renowned sportswriter and football official.
The Maxwell Award watch list will once again incorporate a broad spectrum of Football Bowl Subdivision (FBS) programs and conferences from coast to coast, led by Caleb Williams (USC) who was the 2022 winner. Williams is joined by 7 additional returning semifinalists, Brock Bowers (Georgia), Drake Maye (North Carolina), Marvin Harrison Jr. (Ohio State), Bo Nix (Oregon), Cameron Rising (Utah), Michael Penix Jr. (Washington) and Blake Corum (Michigan).
