CFB Week 12: Unbeatens win again; FSU loses QB Jordan Travis
College football's major unbeatens remained so after Week 12, but while Georgia, Ohio State and Florida State won handily, Michigan and Washington battled to contested victories.
And with The Game between Michigan and Ohio State on tap next week, something has to give. Michigan, without suspended coach Jim Harbaugh this week and next, struggled mightily but pulled out the win at Maryland while Ohio State was fine-tuning its game in a rout of Minnesota. Georgia had its way with Tennessee to remain atop everybody's rankingsm, Florida State impressed despite losing QB Jordan Travis to injury in the first quarter. Oregon and quarterback Bo Nix can't be counted out after Saturday's blowout win.
Here are some details:
No. 1 Georgia, No. 21 Tennessee 10
Carson Beck threw for 298 yards and three touchdowns to lead No. 1 Georgia to a 38-10 win over No. 21 Tennessee on Saturday night in Knoxville, Tenn. Dillon Bell caught five passes for 90 yards and a touchdown, and also threw an 18-yard TD pass to Marcus Rosemy-Jacksaint for the Bulldogs (10-0, 8-0 Southeastern Conference). Rosemy-Jacksaint caught seven passes for 91 yards and two TDs. Georgia became the first team to go unbeaten in the SEC three years in a row since the league went to an eight-game schedule in 1992. Jaylen Wright broke through the middle of the line and went 75 yards for a touchdown on the Volunteers’ (7-4, 3-4) first snap of the game. He finished with 90 yards rushing. Georgia was impressive on third down, converting on 9 of 12 tries before the Bulldogs began killing the clock. Tennessee struggled, going 2 for 11. Beck was efficient in the first half, completing17 of 20 passes for 210 yards and two touchdowns, leading the Bulldogs to a 24-10 lead. Tennessee gained 75 rushing yards on the first snap and had 37 the rest of the half. Georgia became the first team to go unbeaten in the SEC three years in a row since the league went to an eight-game schedule in 1992.
No. 2 Michigan, Maryland 24
RB Blake Corum scored twice in the first half, Mike Sainristil intercepted two passes, and No. 2 Michigan — playing again without suspended coach Jim Harbaugh — became the first college football program to win 1,000 games, beating Maryland 31-24 on Saturday in College Park, Md. The Wolverines (11-0, 8-0 Big Ten) remained unbeaten in their final tune-up before next weekend’s showdown against No. 3 Ohio State, but it wasn’t easy. Maryland (6-5, 3-5) rallied from a 23-3 deficit and had the ball down five on multiple occasions in the fourth quarter.
No. 3 Ohio State 37, Minnesota 3
TreVeyon Henderson rushed for 146 yards and two touchdowns and Kyle McCord passed for 212 yards and two scores, leading the Buckeyes (11-0, 8-0 Big Ten) over the Golden Gophers (5-6, 3-5) in Columbus, Ohio.
No. 4 Florida State 56, North Alabama 13
The Seminoles lost star quarterback Jordan Travis to a leg injury in the first quarter, yet rallied behind backup Tate Rodemaker in Tallahassee. Travis suffered what appeared to be a major injury to his left knee/leg on a run up the middle. After an air cast was placed on the leg, Travis was carted off. Florida State coach Mike Norvell told CW Network at the intermission that “obviously it didn’t look good.” Rodemaker completed 13 of 23 passes for 217 yards with touchdown passes to Keon Coleman and Caziah Holmes as the Seminoles (11-0) won their 17th straight game.
No. 6 Oregon 49,Arizona State 13
Before leaving the game in the third quarter, QB Bo Nix threw for 404 yards and a career-high six scores. Patrick Herbert and Troy Franklin each caught two TD passes and the Ducks (10-1, 6-2 Pac-12) rolled atArizona State (3-8, 2-6). The Ducks buried the Sun Devils with an avalanche of offense on the way to a 42-0 lead, scoring TDs on their first six drives and gaining 444 total yards. Nix — a Heisman Trophy candidate — had TD passes of 23, 49, 16, 45, 71 and 16 yards.
No. 7 Texas 26, Iowa State 16
Quinn Ewers passed for 281 yards and two touchdowns, as the Longhorns (10-1, 7-1 Big Ten) pulled away from the host Cyclones (6-5, 5-3). The win keeps the Longhorns alone atop the Big Ten.
No. 9 LOUISVILLE 38, MIAMI 31
Jack Plummer threw three touchdown passes, the last a 58-yarder to Kevin Coleman with 4:17 remaining, and visiting Louisville (10-1, 7-1 ACC) clinched a spot in the Atlantic Coast Conference title game by beating Miami (6-5, 2-5 ACC).
No. 11 Missouri 33, Florida 31
Harrison Mevis kicked a 30-yard field goal with 5 seconds remaining, and Brady Cook completed 20 of 34 passes for 326 yards and a touchdown to lift the Tigers (9-2, 5-2 SEC).
No. 12 PENN STATE 27, RUTGERS 6
Kaytron Allen ran for two touchdowns, Alex Felkins kicked a pair of field goals and Penn State (9-2, 6-2) pulled away from Rutgers (6-5, 3-5 Big Ten) after quarterback Drew Allar left with an apparent injury.
No. 13 MISSISSIPPI 35, LOUISIANA-MONROE 3
Jaxson Dart threw three touchdowns three consecutive third-quarter series as Mississippi (9-2, 5-2 SEC) used a strong second half to defeat visiting Louisiana-Monroe (2-9, 0-8).
No. 14 OKLAHOMA 31, BYU 24
Oklahoma (9-2, 6-2 Big 12) converted three into 21 points and edged BYU (5-6, 2-6), despite playing the second half without quarterback Dillon Gabriel. Gabriel threw for 191 yards and a pair of touchdowns, but he suffered a head injury just before halftime.
No. 19 Arizona 42, No. 16 Utah 18
Noah Fifita threw two touchdowns and the Wildcats (8-3, 6-2 Pac-12 used a fast start to earn its its first five-game winning streak in nine years. The host Wildcats manhandled the two-time reigning Pac-12 champs, building a 28-0 lead by the first play of the second quarter. Utah is 7-4, 4-4).
No. 20 Notre Dame 45, Wake Forest 7
Sam Hartman tormented his former team, passing for 277 yards and four touchdowns to lead the host Fighting Irish (8-3) over the Demon Deacons 4-7).
Clemson 31, No. 22 North Carolina 20
Cade Klubnik threw for 219 yards and a touchdown and host Clemson (7-4, 4-4Atlantic Coast Conference) held the high-scoring Tar Heels (8-3, 4-3) to their fewest points this season.
No. 23 Kansas 31, Kansas 27
Will Howard threw two touchdown passes, ran for the go-ahead score and the Wildcats took advantage of two special teams blunders by rival Kansas. The Wildcats (8-3, 6-2) rallied to their 15th straight win in the Sunflower Showdown
UCLA 38, USC 20
T.J. Harden rushed for a career-high 142 yards and scored two touchdowns, Ethan Garbers threw three TD passes and the Bruins (7-4, 4-4 Pac-12) trounced spiraling Trojans (7-5, 5-4) at the L.A. Coliseum.
Washington State 56, Colorado 14
Cameron Ward threw for 288 yards and accounted for four TDs, Brennan Jackson had two scoop-and-score TDs and the host Cougars (5-6, 2-6). snapped a six-game losing streak and ended the Buffaloes’ hopes of a bowl game in the first year under Deion Sanders. Colorado QB Shedeur Sanders (hand) left the game in the first half after taking a big hit on a botched snap. Colorado is 4-7, 1-7
