Young WRs flash and other takeaways from Florida football practice
Gainesville Sun
Florida football practiced in full pads on Tuesday as fall camp continued in preparation for its season opener on Aug. 31 at No. 14 Utah.
The Florida Gators mapped out a plan to practice 15 times over a three-week period, progressing to full pads and full contact in week two in the sweltering humidity.
"There's only one way to get in condition to play this game," Florida coach Billy Napier said. "We can work on speed improvement, we can do conditioning tests, we can lift weights, we can do football activities in T-shirts, but I think you have to put the gear on, and you got to get on the field and start working against each other.
"There's a certain conditioning element to this game that is different and certainly the fundamentals and techniques that are important at each position group, they're different with gear on."
Here are three takeaways from Tuesday's 15-minute open portion of practice
Young Florida football WRs continue to flash
Florida freshman wide receivers Aidan Mizell, Eugene Wilson III and Andy Jean continued to impress coaches with their speed and route running ability. Napier expects the trio to help add a vertical element to the passing game.
"I think Andy, Aidan and Trey (Wilson), all three, are verified fast," Napier said. "Receiver is still a very skilled position so it's one thing to be fast and another to play fast. There's a mental component here relative to my assignment, my technique, my adjustment to the coverage. Whether it's steps or depth or landmarks on the field, I think we're seeing them get comfortable."
Napier said Wilson, who sat out most of the first week of practice with a soft tissue injury, cut it loose on Sunday and had a strong practice.
"He'll make our team better," Napier said.
UF football WR Ricky Pearsall back, OL Richie Leonard IV working out on the side
Pearsall was back in drills on Tuesday after sitting out Saturday's practice with an undisclosed illness.
Leonard IV, UF's starter at right guard in the spring game, was on the sidelines in a non-contact jersey with UF strength and conditioning coach Mark Hocke. Offensive lineman Kameron Waites, who is rehabbing from a torn Achilles suffered last January, also was working out on the sidelines.
Tight end Arlis Boardingham was in a non-contact jersey but took part in live passing routes with other tight ends. Offensive lineman Micah Mazzccua and tight end Jonathan Odom remained in non-contact jerseys but worked out with their position groups.
Florida Gators QB Max Brown showing progress
Florida sophomore quarterback Max Brown, who was the third quarterback behind Graham Mertz and Jack Miller in the spring game, is showing progress in fall camp. Brown, a two-way athlete who plays on UF's baseball team, brings an athletic element to the position, with Mertz and Miller as more traditional pocket passers.
"There's no doubt his accuracy is improved," Napier said. "I think he's cleaned up his footwork, his stroke is much more consistent. And again, I think there's some knowledge that contributes to that table in terms of understanding the system, so I think Max has come along pretty nicely."
