Michigan DL coach Greg Scruggs arrested for OWI in Ann Arbor

By Aaron McMann New Michigan defensive line coach Greg Scruggs was arrested early Saturday in Ann Arbor for operating a motor vehicle while intoxicated, police say. Chris Page, a spokesperson for the Ann Arbor Police Department, confirmed the early-morning arrest to MLive on Saturday. “He was arrested for OWI at approximately 3 a.

m. ,” Page wrote in an email. No other details on the incident were provided.

MLive has requested a copy of the police report. In a statement, Michigan says it has suspended Scruggs indefinitely pending further review of the incident. “Greg made an unfortunate mistake and was arrested for operating a vehicle while intoxicated,” head coach Sherrone Moore said in a statement.

“He made no excuses and has taken accountability for his actions. The football program and athletic department have suspended Greg indefinitely while we review details of the incident. ” Penalties for operating a vehicle while intoxicated in Michigan include up to 93 days in jail, fines up to $500, community service and a suspension of one’s driver’s license.

As a senior at the University of Louisville, Scruggs was arrested in December 2011 for driving under the influence and suspended from the football team’s Belk Bowl game. Scruggs, 33, was hired by Moore, Michigan’s first-year head coach, earlier this month. The program formally named him defensive line coach on March 6.

“I have known Greg since our time together at Louisville and have always appreciated his drive and passion for the game,” Moore said in a statement announcing his hire. “We have stayed in contact through the years, and I always knew that Greg would be a great leader and teacher for a program that I was fortunate enough to assemble. Greg is a great football coach and an even better person.

“He will be an outstanding mentor for our players, especially the guys on the defensive line, and will help them achieve their football goals. ” The Cincinnati, Ohio, native spent last season as defensive line coach at Wisconsin. He was a defensive line assistant for the NFL’s New York Jets in 2022 and spent the previous four seasons at Cincinnati.

A seventh-round draft pick of the Seattle Seahawks in 2012, Scruggs played five seasons in the NFL before retiring in 2016. Michigan is set to start spring practice on Monday in Ann Arbor. .
