Everything we know about Mike McCarthy’s return as Cowboys head coach
5-6 minutes 1/20/2024 Dallas Cowboys head coach Mike McCarthy speaks during his end of season press conference at. . .
After a first-round playoff thumping and a lot of speculation, Cowboys head coach Mike McCarthy will indeed be returning for his fifth season at the helm in Dallas. It will be the final year of McCarthy’s five-year contract with Dallas. Here’s everything we know so far about McCarthy’s return: On the first-round loss to the Packers.
. . McCarthy: “You can’t chase big plays.
There were a number of times we were chasing plays. ” On his post-season meeting with Jerry Jones. .
. McCarthy: “The best meetings I have with Jerry is one-on-one. They’re super productive.
He’s an awesome boss but he’s even a better leader. He asks all the hard direct questions which I love and appreciate because you get a depth into conversations that go into different directions which is always so much that come out of it. ” On entering the final season of his five-year contract.
. . McCarthy: “I didn’t come here to get another contract.
I came here to win a championship. ” McCarthy’s message to the fans. .
. McCarthy: “They should be frustrated. We’re extremely disappointed.
Disappointed for them. Disappointed in our performance. But my message would be this.
We have established a championship program. It’s just not a world championship yet. We know how to win.
We know how to train to win. We have the right people. But we have not crossed the threshold winning playoff games.
” Full statement from Jerry Jones: “I believe this team is very close and capable of achieving our ultimate goals and the best step forward for us will be with Mike McCarthy as our head coach. There is great benefit to continuing the team’s progress under Mike’s leadership as our head coach. Specifically, there are many layers of success that have occurred this season as a result of Mike’s approach to leading the team, both with individual players and with our team collectively.
Mike has the highest regular season winning percentage of any head coach in Cowboys history and we will dedicate ourselves, in partnership with him, to translating that into reaching our post season goals. Certainly, Mike’s career has demonstrated post season success at a high level, and we have great confidence that can continue. “Further, our loss on Sunday is shared by everyone here, not just Coach McCarthy.
Our players. Our coaches. Our front office.
Myself. There is accountability for our results. I am accountable for our results.
The lens we use to view and evaluate Coach McCarthy is holistic. While we’re all disappointed with the result on Sunday and with our playoff record, I am 100 percent supportive of him as our head coach and ability to reach our goals. “We will start our process of review and decision making regarding everything that impacts our team and roster and, while we’re not going to address specific players and extensions or free agents at this point, it deserves our deepest review and consideration, and it will get it.
” Sherrington: Jerry Jones turned the Dallas Cowboys into reality TV. Are fans, media to blame? One of my favorite quotes from Mike McCarthy’s victory lap of the Star after the announcement that he’d be back for a fifth year came when he called his Cowboys “a championship program; it’s just not a world champion yet. ” Got to admire the chutzpah.
Either you’re a champion or you’re not, Mike. Like being pregnant. There’s no quantifying such a thing.
Gehlken: Mike McCarthy, Cowboys’ front office must fix glaring weakness this offseason The season was on the line Sunday when the Cowboys defense took the field in the third quarter, trailing 27-10. Dallas had scored 10 points in two possessions to close the first half and start the second. Now, a desperate defense needed stops to keep the deficit manageable.
Green Bay Packers running back Aaron Jones logged seven carries the next three drives. Each was more damning than the last. Cowlishaw: Cowboys-Eagles rivalry could suddenly turn into race toward NFC East mediocrity The Cowboys’ season ended a week earlier than their last one.
The Eagles’ season ended a month earlier than their last one. The battle is over and, to the dismay of both, neither even made the final eight of the NFL playoffs. But the rivalry continues, hotter than ever.
