Detroit Lions to wear new blue helmets on Monday Night Football against Las Vegas Raiders

The Detroit Lions will be wearing their new Honolulu Blue helmet with the throwback Lions' logo for their Monday night showdown against the Las Vegas Raiders. It is the first time Detroit will wear the blue helmet for a game since they were unveiled in June. The new helmet replaces the traditional silver with Honolulu Blue and uses the classic Walking Lion logo, the official team logo from 1946-69, to commemorate the franchise's 90th anniversary.

Full uniform The blue helmets will be worn with Detroit's gray alternate uniform. The Lions have worn the all-gray outfit into battle in past seasons, but only with the traditional silver cap. They debuted in 2017 as the team's color rush alternate and were last worn in Week 8 last year against the Miami Dolphins.

The Lions will wear the alternate uniform and helmet in the season finale against the Minnesota Vikings as well. Aspects of the historic logo have been used by the franchise in the recent past, including a previous 'WCF' jersey patch to honor the former owner William Clay Ford that used the same vertical bars. The Lions have worn the helmets at select practices over the last two weeks to break them in, as per NFL rules.

NFL helmet, uniform policy The NFL amended a policy in 2022 to allow teams to wear one alternate helmet in addition to the regular one. Thirteen teams jumped on the chance right away and implemented the fresh look last season. Seven more teams, including the Lions, jumped on board this season, bringing the alternate helmet total to 20.

Teams in the NFL are only allowed to change jerseys every five years and the alternate helmets have to include a logo from some point in the team's history. The Lions last unveiled new home, away, Color Rush and throwback uniforms in 2017, and president Rod Wood told the Free Press in February they are talking with Nike about coming out with some new jerseys for 2024. .
