Giants playoff, Super Bowl odds drop after ugly Week 1 loss

Week 1 wasn’t pretty for the New York Football Giants. Brian Daboll’s team was blown out of the water by the Dallas Cowboys, losing 40-0 on “Sunday Night Football. ” They gave up two defensive touchdowns in the first quarter and three largely garbage-time rushing touchdowns in a game that was all but over before halftime.

The Giants went into the game as 3. 5-point underdogs, so a win wasn’t exactly expected, but a drubbing of that proportion put oddsmakers on notice. After opening the season as a roughly middle-of-the-pack team in terms of Super Bowl odds at BetMGM (+4000, T-16th best odds), the Giants are now +8000 to win the title, tied for the 21st-best odds with the Rams and Raiders.

Only eight teams have odds worse than New York, which is not a spot Giants fans hoped to be in before the season started. The sportsbooks also cut the team’s playoff odds after the loss and wins by all three NFC East competitors. The Giants opened the season at +140 to make the playoffs (BetMGM) – underdogs, for sure, but not unrealistic.

They’re now in long shot range at +340 to play postseason football, and +2000 – the worst odds in the division – to win the NFC East. Their odds to win the NFC dropped from +2500 to +3500, which are the seventh-worst odds in the conference. Luckily for the Giants, they’ll have a great opportunity to get right when they play the lowly Arizona Cardinals in Glendale on Sunday.

If they handle the Cardinals as they should, the Giants might see a slight bump in their season-long futures odds, but it’s the next four games that’ll likely make or break their season. In the four weeks after their match-up with Arizona, the Giants will visit the 49ers, Dolphins and Bills and host the Seahawks. Come out of that tough four-game stretch with two wins or more and the Giants will likely be right in the playoff mix.

Anything worse, and they’ll be even longer shots to make the playoffs, let alone win the Super Bowl, then they are now. .
