What did Jerry Jones say about Dak Prescott’s contract, future with Dallas Cowboys?

Jerry Jones traded for quarterback Trey Lance a fortnight before the start of the 2023 NFL season without without telling coach Mike McCarthy or starting quarterback Dak Prescott because he has the team structure and authority to do so as owner and general manager of the Dallas Cowboys. That same Jerry Jones essentially said the deal has no impact on Prescott’s future with the Cowboys. According to a source, the Cowboys have not had any recent talks with Prescott or his representatives about a contract extension.

With a $59 million cap hit in 2024, the final year of a four-year, $160 million contract he signed in 2021, the Cowboys have said since the end of the 2022 season that they would like to sign Prescott to an extension to lower his cap hit. The Cowboys have signed four players to long-term deals: safeties Malik Hooker and Donovan Wilson, cornerback Trevon Diggs and right tackle Terence Steele. They have also boosted the pay of left guard Zack Martin by $8.

5 million over the next two years with an adjusted deal to end his contract hold out. But it has been all quiet on the Prescott front. The deal for Lance, a former first-round draft pick of the San Francisco 49ers, for a fourth-round pick has caused some to wonder if it was point ploy as leverage in talks with Prescott as well as a potential option as a Prescott replacement if the Cowboys don’t final break through in the playoffs.

Jones said on his radio show on 105. 3 the Fan on Tuesday that a Prescott contract is always on his mind and he believes it will eventually get done. More importantly, “We expect Dak to be with us a long time,” Jones said.

Jones said the negotiating table is always open and a deal can get done at any time, even during the the season, especially with the team’s front office structure. Jones believes the Cowboys’ structure helped get Lance trade done quickly in a competitive market. “The way we’re structured gets a lot of criticism.

Unquestionably, it does,” Jones said. “But it lets us do a trade like we did the other day on Lance, because I didn’t have to fool around. I can make that trade in five minutes.

And the reason I can is I have all the information, had it from when we drafted him, I had information right at my fingertips of what we thought of his play in the last couple of years. I knew what we thought of him. I didn’t have to visit with anybody about what type of player he is.

So I was able to make the call. . .

. I don’t have to talk to anybody about that. ” “If you had to think long or hard or have a committee meeting over something like that, that thing’s gone.

You missed it. So many things are like that. So we don’t have that internal three-man, four-man check off through the organization.

We don’t have to have that if it’s not called for. ” Lance is working as the team’s third quarterback behind Prescott and backup Cooper Rush. The Cowboys see Lance, who had just four starts during a disappointing two seasons with the 49ers, as a developmental quarterback for the future.

He could eventually compete for the backup job in 2024. .
