Does Chiefs’ Patrick Mahomes have a chip on his shoulder heading into 2023? He says yes

At this time last year, the Chiefs were seen by many pundits as a candidate to take a step back. The Chiefs had traded All-Pro wide receiver Tyreek Hill during the offseason while the other AFC West teams had made what seemed to be splashy additions. While at Chiefs camp earlier this month, Alex Marvez of SiriusXM said there seemed to be a chip on quarterback Patrick Mahomes’ shoulder in 2022 about the negative talk.

Marvez asked Mahomes if he has a chip on his shoulder going into the 2023 season, something that motivates him. Mahomes said he does: it’s that desire to win a Super Bowl. “I think I always have that chip on my shoulder,” Mahomes said.

“I think it’s more that I understand how lucky I am to be here. I understand that you don’t have these windows where you can win Super Bowls too long usually, and luckily for us that window has been very big. But you go out there and you have that mentality every single year, you’re gonna go try to win that thing again.

“And you heard (general manager Brett) Veach just talk about once you win it once, you have even that more fire to go do it again and have that parade in Kansas City. ” Mahomes paused for a split-second and added: “And maybe I can get on Saturday Night Live this time. You know, it opens up a lot of opportunities for you.

” The Chiefs enter the 2023 season with two new members on the offensive line. Left tackle Orlando Brown Jr. signed as a free agent with the Bengals after the season, while right tackle Andrew Wylie joined the Commanders.

The Chiefs signed Jawaan Taylor at right tackle and Donovan Smith for left tackle. Mahomes called them “gems. ” “I mean, two great guys first off.

The moment they came in, they really just gelled with the rest of the guys in that room,” Mahomes said. “Obviously extremely talented, both of those guys. And like you said, to add them to the offensive line that we already had, obviously we lost two good players.

“But Brett Veach and coach (Andy) Reid, they really found two gems, two guys that can really play great football, and I’m excited for the opportunities it’s going to open up in the offense to have two athletic tackles. They really go around and make every single block out there. ” .
