Cowboys' Trey Lance getting to know surroundings after Dallas arrival

Trey Lance has arrived.
The Cowboys’ new quarterback is putting in work at The Star, getting to know teammates, coaches and the offense with the team preparing for its regular season opener at the New York Giants next week.
For the near future, Lance will participate in what coach Mike McCarthy called, “young player meetings three times a week” in addition to post-practice work.
Lance got to North Texas on Sunday, 48 hours following a daring trade with the 49ers where the Cowboys sent their old playoff rival a 2024 fourth-round pick.
McCarthy said he was part of the evaluation process of the trade, while team owner and general manager Jerry Jones, team executive vice president Stephen Jones and Will McClay, vice president of player personnel, handled what the compensation would look like to complete a deal.
“I think the biggest thing, I recall, is the athletic ability was definitely something that jumps off to you,” McCarthy said of Lance in a Monday afternoon conference call. “You look at his career, pandemic and some of the things he went through there, I thought he was a young, intriguing prospect.”
The 49ers sent three first-round picks to the Dolphins to move up and select Lance with the third overall pick of the 2021 NFL draft. Injuries have halted Lance’s career, where he’s started just four NFL games.
McCarthy added the Cowboys received positive reports regarding Lance’s ability to blend into the quarterback room led by Dak Prescott.
McCarthy also dismissed the notion that Prescott would have any issues with Lance — who will be No. 3 on the depth chart behind Cooper Rush — joining the team.
“It’s always tough when there is change,” McCarthy said. “Trey, everything we’ve been told about him, has been A-plus. I do have confidence he’ll be a good addition to our room.”
