Tomlin's son commits to Maryland
Wide receiver Dino Tomlin, son of Pittsburgh Steelers head coach Mike Tomlin, has committed to Maryland.
Wide receiver Dino Tomlin, son of Pittsburgh Steelers head coach Mike Tomlin, became the first high school prospect to sign with Maryland since the Terrapins fired coach DJ Durkin last week.
With the early-signing period set to begin early in December, Dino Tomlin took to Twitter on Tuesday night and posted a picture of himself in uniform with the word "committed" written out against the backdrop of a Maryland logo.
Tomlin is a three-star 2019 prospect at Sunny Side High School in Pittsburgh who is rated as the No. 35 player at any position in the state of Pennsylvania on 247Sports.com's composite board.
With the addition of Tomlin, the Terrapins have 10 players committed in a class that is ranked 70th nationally and 13th in the 14-team Big Ten by 247Sports.com. The only school in the conference ranked lower than Maryland is Illinois at No. 72.
The 6-foot, 165-pound Tomlin is having a big senior season for the No. 1-ranked team in WPIAL Class 2A. Tomlin is averaging 35 yards per catch and has scored 18 touchdowns on receptions, interceptions and kick returns.
Shady Side Academy is 10-0 and will play South Side Beaver in Friday's WPIAL quarterfinals.
The speedy Tomlin won the 300-meter hurdles at last season's PIAA Class 2A track and field championships.
Durkin, was fired last Wednesday, one day after he was reinstated after a suspension following an investigation into the Maryland football program.
Not only was Durkin accused of creating a verbally abusive atmosphere at Maryland, but on June 13 offensive lineman Jordan McNair died due to a heatstroke he suffered at a May 29 workout.
Matt Canada is serving as Maryland's interim coach this season.
