Prep Top 100: California Rivals Nos. 1-2 in HSFA ratings

Week 11 Rankings

HSFA - High School Football America

Updated on October 31, 2023

The country's top two high school teams begin the playoff hunt in California with a possible showdown looming in several weeks.

No. 1 St. John Bosco (California), the defending HSFA national champs, will open the CIF-Southern Section Division 1 playoffs in two weeks against No. 106 San Clemente. A win would send them into the semifinals against the winner of the game between No. 21 Corona Centennial and No. 70 Orange Lutheran.

Waiting on the other side of the bracket is arch-rival Mater Dei, which moves from No. 3 to No. 2 in this week's rankings. The Monarchs will open the playoffs against No. 93 JSerra. Waiting in the semifinals will be the winner of the first round game between No. 14 Sierra Canyon and No. 80 Santa Margarita.

Bishop Gorman (Nevada) dropped to No. 3 this week. The Gaels are two wins away from another Nevada state championship. They'll face Coronado in the Class 5A Division I semifinals before a possible matchup with No. 167 Liberty (9-2) or Shadow Ridge (6-4) in the finals.

The Gaels started the season with five wins over ranked competition. But after beating Liberty 49-6 on September 14, Gorman rolled past unranked teams en route to a 10-0 record. Their relatively low strength-of-schedule has hurt Gorman in the national rankings, which are determined by HSFA's proprietary algorithm.

Duncanville's dream of a national championship came to a close Saturday with a 49-35 loss to DeSoto in a battle of reigning Texas state champs. Duncanville tumbles from No. 8 to No. 20, while DeSoto climbs into the top 10.

Indiana’s Ben Davis continues its ascent in the national rankings after handing former No. 52 Brownsburg its first loss of the season in the opening round of the Class 6A playoffs. The Giants, who opened the season just outside of the HSFA 300, now sit at No. 54 after coming back from a 25-7 deficit against the Bulldogs. BD’s only loss this year came against No. 5 IMG Academy (Florida).
