NFL notebook: Saints reportedly get QB Bridgewater from Jets

The New York Jets traded quarterback Teddy Bridgewater to the New Orleans Saints on Wednesday, according to multiple media reports. In addition, the Saints reportedly will receive a sixth-round draft choice in 2019, while surrendering a third-round selection to the Jets next year. Bridgewater will back up veteran Drew Brees and could be the Saints' heir-apparent for the 39-year-old. The 6-foot-2, 215-pound Bridgewater was the No. 1 draft choice (No. 32 overall) of the Minnesota Vikings out of Louisville in 2014, when he was NFL Rookie of the Year, and in 2015 he made the Pro Bowl. However, he sustained a torn left ACL during training camp in 2016 and the Vikings declined to pick up the fifth year of his rookie contract before last season. --Seattle Seahawks wide receiver Tyler Lockett agreed to terms on a multi-year contract extension, the team announced. The Seahawks did not specify the exact length of the deal, although multiple media outlets reported that it's for three years. NFL Network's Mike Garafolo reported that Lockett agreed to the deal that has $20 million in guaranteed money. Per Garafolo, the base total value of the pact is $31.8 million while the maximum is $37.8 million. Lockett, who finished with 45 catches for 555 yards and two touchdowns last season, was set to make $1.9 million during the final year of his rookie contract. --Cleveland Browns linebacker Mychal Kendricks apologized after being one of two men charged with insider trading by federal officials. U.S. Attorney William McSwain announced the criminal charges for Kendricks, who said he accepts "full responsibility for my actions." Kendricks allegedly made a profit of nearly $1.2 million from investments tied to insider trading four years ago. Damilare Sonoiki, who is a television writer, also has been charged with assisting Kendricks. Kendricks' attorney told philly.com that his client is expected to formally plead guilty in the coming weeks. --New York Giants wide receiver Odell Beckham Jr. said that the price of fame is a costly one during an appearance with NBA superstar LeBron James on HBO's "The Shop." Fresh off signing a five-year, $95-million contract extension on Tuesday, Beckham said later that night that he feels like a "zoo animal" due to some unwanted attention he receives in public. Beckham is recognized wherever he travels, due in large part his colorful wardrobe and daring sense of style. The three-time Pro Bowl selection has gained the attention of the league's fans after recording at least 90 catches, 1,300 yards and 10 touchdowns in each of his first three NFL seasons. Beckham reached 200 receptions and 3,000 receiving yards in only 30 games, getting to those milestones faster than anyone in NFL history. He has caught 313 passes for 4,424 yards and 38 touchdowns in 47 games over four seasons. --The Seattle Seahawks acquired backup quarterback Brett Hundley from Green Bay, the Packers confirmed. NFL Network Insider Ian Rapoport reported that the Packers will receive a sixth-round pick in the 2019 NFL Draft in exchange for Hundley, who filled in for injured Aaron Rodgers last season. Green Bay traded for former Cleveland Browns quarterback DeShone Kizer during the offseason. Kizer joins Tim Boyle as backups for Rodgers, who is a two-time NFL Most Valuable Player and six-time Pro Bowl selection. --Seattle Seahawks wide receiver Doug Baldwin said he expects to enter the season with his knee at less than 100 percent. The injury isn't likely to stop Baldwin from competing in the season opener against the Denver Broncos on Sept. 9. The 29-year-old returned to practice this week after being shut down for the past month with the injury. Baldwin said he first noticed the injury during organized team activities in May. He practiced for the first few days of training camp and didn't feel right, prompting the team to shut him down. --Free-agent wide receiver Dez Bryant said his primary focus is on improving himself, rather than signing with an NFL team. Bryant, in fact, took to social media to announce that he likely will wait until later in the season to put his name on the dotted line. A three-time Pro Bowl selection, Bryant has been without a team since the Dallas Cowboys released him in mid-April in a salary dispute. He met with the Cleveland Browns last week, but left without signing a contract. --Houston Texans linebacker Ben Heeney will miss the entire 2018 season following ankle surgery, Aaron Wilson of the Houston Chronicle reported. The 6-foot-1, 235-pound Heeney was claimed by the Texans on waivers from the New Orleans Saints last October, and finished the season on injured reserve. Heeney, 26, was selected by the Oakland Raiders in the fifth round (140th overall) of the 2015 draft after being an All-Big 12 Conference linebacker at Kansas. After a solid rookie season, the Raiders placed him on the injured reserve list in 2016 and on the non-football injury list in 2017 before waiving him in September. --The San Francisco 49ers placed wide receiver Max McCaffrey on waivers with an injury designation, the team announced. McCaffrey, who sustained an injury to his left foot early in training camp and recently underwent surgery, is expected to be placed on the 49ers' Injured Reserve List if he clears waivers. Or, he could be released by San Francisco with an injury settlement.
