NFL notebook: Packers TE Graham reportedly has broken thumb
Green Bay Packers tight end Jimmy Graham (80) was injured on Thursday night against the Seattle Seahawks and reportedly has a broken thumb.
Green Bay Packers tight end Jimmy Graham sustained a broken thumb and might be out indefinitely, NFL Network reported Friday.
Graham was injured in the first half of Thursday night's 27-24 loss to the Seattle Seahawks. He did not return, and NFL.com reported that the injury was "feared to be serious."
The injury appeared to occur on a blocking play along the right sideline late in the first half. Graham had one reception for 13 yards before exiting the game.
Thursday was a homecoming game of sorts for Graham, who spent the previous three seasons with Seattle before signing a three-year, $30 million contract in March on the first day of free agency.
Graham has 34 receptions for 452 yards and two touchdowns for the Packers, but he has become an afterthought in the offense, with one catch in three of the past four games.
The 10-year veteran had 170 receptions in three seasons with the Seahawks and 10 touchdowns in 2017, marking the fourth time he has amassed double-digit touchdowns.
Green Bay has three other tight ends on the roster with Lance Kendricks, Marcedes Lewis and rookie Robert Tonyan, who had a 54-yard touchdown against Seattle for his first career catch.
Graham, who will turn 32 on Nov. 24, spent his first five seasons in New Orleans and emerged as one of the league's elite tight ends with 51 scoring passes, including a career-best 16 in 2013.
A third-round pick of the Saints in the 2010 NFL Draft, the 6-foot-7, 265-pound Graham has claimed Pro Bowl honors five times, including his final two seasons with Seattle.
Graham has 590 receptions for 7,252 yards and 71 touchdowns in 131 career games.
--Rookie quarterback Lamar Jackson was back at practice with the Baltimore Ravens on Friday after sitting out the day before because of a stomach ailment, and he might start against the Cincinnati Bengals on Sunday.
That's because starter Joe Flacco missed his third practice of the week with a right hip injury he sustained two weeks ago against the Pittsburgh Steelers and is listed as doubtful for this week. Jackson has played in every game this season at several positions, completing 7 of 12 passes for 87 yards and a touchdown, plus rushing 28 times for 139 yards and a score.
The Ravens (4-5) also could go with veteran Robert Griffin III, who was the only quarterback at practice on Thursday, but he has not been active for a game this season. The 28-year-old Griffin has played 42 games in his NFL career with the Washington Redskins and Cleveland Browns, passing for 8,983 yards and 42 touchdowns with 26 interceptions.
Coach John Harbaugh has not said whether Jackson or Griffin would start if Flacco can't play, but he also has said his starter could play without practicing if he's healthy.
--Cincinnati Bengals running back Joe Mixon was removed from the team's injury report on Friday. He was a surprise addition to the injury report on Thursday when he was limited in practice with a knee injury, but The Cincinnati Enquirer reported that Mixon "looks all systems go" for Sunday's game at the Baltimore Ravens.
Bengals wide receiver A.J. Green, who is dealing with a toe injury that forced him to sit out last week's lopsided loss to New Orleans, was listed as doubtful for Sunday's game and not expected to play. He has 45 catches and six touchdowns, including three scoring passes in the earlier matchup against Baltimore.
Mixon's knee issue appeared to be a setback for the second-year running back, who missed two games earlier this season after undergoing a procedure to repair a slight meniscus tear in his right knee. The team's leading rusher with 570 yards and four touchdowns, Mixon is averaging 4.9 yards per carry and also has 21 catches and a receiving TD.
Mixon rushed for 84 yards on 21 carries against the Ravens in Week 2 after opening the season with 95 yards and a touchdown on 17 rushes in a win at Indianapolis.
--Wide receiver Marvin Jones of the Detroit Lions is seeking a second opinion on what was diagnosed as only a bone bruise in his right knee because he is not getting better, ESPN reported Friday. The Lions declared him out of Sunday's game against the Carolina Panthers.
Jones, who sustained the injury in the second half of last week's game against the Chicago Bears, was listed as day to day early in the week but did not practice all week and reportedly is experiencing significant pain in the knee. The original diagnosis was that Jones did not suffer an injury to his MCL and ACL, making the Lions believe that he would recover fairly quickly, but that has not happened.
When the Lions dealt top wide receiver Golden Tate to the Philadelphia Eagles at the trade deadline, Jones moved into the starting lineup opposite Kenny Galloway, the new No. 1 target for quarterback Matthew Stafford. Jones has caught 35 passes for 508 yards and five touchdowns this season.
Jones, who has been the Lions' primary deep threat, is expected to be replaced in the lineup by TJ Jones. Wide receivers Bruce Ellington and Brandon Powell, or running back Theo Riddick will play when Detroit goes with a three-receiver set.
--The Denver Broncos took another hit along the offensive line leading up to Sunday's matchup at the Los Angeles Chargers when left guard Max Garcia was ruled out for the season with a torn anterior cruciate ligament, according to Mike Klis of 9News.com.
Garcia practiced fully on Wednesday and Thursday but felt discomfort in the knee. He underwent an MRI that revealed the severity of his injury. A fourth-round pick of the Broncos in the 2015 NFL Draft, Garcia started the past four games after Ronald Leary suffered a season-ending torn Achilles.
The 6-foot-4, 309-pound Garcia had started all 16 games in each of the past two seasons after starting five of 15 games during his rookie campaign.
Before last week's bye, Denver lost starting center Matt Paradis to a fractured left fibula in the second quarter of a 19-17 setback to Houston. Billy Turner is expected to take over as the starting left guard while Connor McGovern will replace Paradis at center. Elijah Wilkinson will start at right guard.
--The Indianapolis Colts signed quarterback Phillip Walker to the practice squad on Friday and released defensive end Anthony Winbush from the practice squad. The 5-foot-11, 216-pound Walker has had four previous stints on the Colts' practice squad this season. He went through the team's 2018 offseason program and training camp before being waived during final cuts before the season opener on Sept. 1.
Walker signed a reserve/future contract with the Colts on Jan. 1 after spending the 2017 season on Indianapolis' practice squad. He was signed by the Colts as an undrafted free agent out of Temple on May 4, 2017. In his career at Temple, Walker passed for 10,668 yards and 74 touchdowns with 44 interceptions.
The 6-1, 240-pound Winbush was signed to the Colts' practice squad on Nov. 13. He participated in the Atlanta Falcons' 2018 offseason program and training camp before being waived during final cuts on September.
Winbush signed with the Atlanta Falcons as an undrafted free agent out of Ball State on May 1, 2018. He played in 45 career games, with 23 starts, at Ball State and totaled 99 tackles (56 solo), 32.5 tackles for losses, 25.0 sacks, one pass defensed, nine forced fumbles and two fumble recoveries.
--Roger Staubach and Alan Page, both members of the Pro Football Hall of Fame, received the Presidential Medal of Freedom from President Donald Trump during a ceremony at the White House on Friday. The Presidential Medal of Freedom is the nation's highest civilian honor.
Staubach, who played quarterback for the Dallas Cowboys, graduated from the U.S. Naval Academy and served in the Navy during the Vietnam War before beginning his NFL career. During his 11-year career with the Cowboys, he led Dallas to two Super Bowl titles while passing for 22,700 yards and 153 touchdowns. He also rushed for 2,264 yards for a 5.5-yard average and 20 touchdowns before retiring in 1979. He was inducted into the Hall of Fame in 1985.
Page played 15 NFL seasons with the Minnesota Vikings and Chicago Bears at defensive tackle, developing a reputation as one of the league's most fearsome pass rushers. A nine-time Pro Bowl selection, Page was the NFL Defensive Player of the Year in 1971 and 1973, and was chosen the league's Most Valuable Player in 1971. He was inducted into the Hall of Fame in 1988.
After retiring from football, Page embarked on a legal career and served for more than two decades as a Minnesota Supreme Court justice.
Others honored with the Presidential Medal of Freedom during the ceremony were baseball great Babe Ruth of the New York Yankees; rock and roll legend Elvis Presley; Supreme Court Justice Antonin Scalia; Miriam Adelson, a doctor and wife of casino magnate Sheldon Adelson; and Utah Sen. Orrin Hatch, who is retiring after more than 41 years in the U.S. Senate.
