NFL Coaching Carousel: Bengals Lewis among those dismissed

The NFL coaching carousel started in earnest earlier this season, as the Cleveland Browns dismissed Hue Jackson following a Week 8 loss to the Pittsburgh Steelers and the Green Bay Packers parted ways with Mike McCarthy after a Week 13 setback to the Arizona Cardinals. After the Tampa Bay Buccaneers dismissed Dirk Koetter and the New York Jets did the same with Todd Bowles on Sunday, four more teams parted ways with their head coaches on what is being referred to as "Black Monday." Here's a look at the day's events: The Bengals fire Lewis: The Marvin Lewis Era has ended after 16 seasons with the Cincinnati Bengals. The Bengals fired Lewis as the team's head coach, the team announced. Lewis, who received NFL Coach of the Year honors in 2009, was the second-most tenured coach in the league behind New England Patriots coach Bill Belichick. "I want to thank the Bengals' organization, the fans and the city of Cincinnati for their support," the 60-year-old Lewis said. "I regret I haven't been able to provide them with the No. 1 goal of being world champions. I also want to thank our players, coaches and team employees for their effort and professionalism over the past 16 years. A lot of fine people have gone through this building in that time, and the organization is better for all of them having been a part of it." The Cardinals can Wilks: The Arizona Cardinals fired Steve Wilks after one season as head coach, the team announced. Arizona limped to a 3-13 mark under the watch of Wilks, who was hired on Jan. 22 to replace the retiring Bruce Arians. The record was the worst in 18 years for the Cardinals, who secured the top overall pick of the 2019 NFL Draft. Wilks was in the midst of his first head-coaching job after serving as a defensive coordinator. The 49-year-old Wilks becomes the first one-and-done coach since Chip Kelly was fired by the San Francisco 49ers in 2016 and the first by the Cardinals since Joe Kuharich was relieved of his duties following a 4-8 season in 1952. The Broncos fire Joseph: The Denver Broncos fired head coach Vance Joseph, the team announced. The news comes one day after Denver finished with a second straight losing season under Joseph, who was 11-21 in his two years at the helm since being hired on Jan. 11, 2017. It was the first time the Broncos have finished consecutive seasons with a losing record since 1971-1972. The Dolphins dismiss Gase: The Miami Dolphins fired Adam Gase after three seasons as their head coach, the team announced. Miami also announced that executive vice president of football operations Mike Tannenbaum will no longer continue to work in that role. General manager Chris Grier has been promoted to run the team's football operations. The Jets terminate Bowles: The New York Jets did what many expected by firing Todd Bowles. The Jets did not wait until Monday to end the four-year tenure of Bowles. Instead they announced the move a few hours after the Jets concluded a 4-12 season with a 38-3 loss in New England on Sunday. "I would like to thank Coach Bowles for his dedication to the New York Jets for the last four years," New York CEO Chris Johnson said in a statement. "After carefully evaluating the situation, I have concluded that this is the right direction for the organization to take. I would like to wish Todd, Taneka and their family only the best." Bowles guided the Jets to a 24-40 record but finished his tenure with three straight seasons of double-digit losses after New York was 10-6 in his first season and was eliminated from postseason contention in Week 17 of the 2015 campaign. The Buccaneers fire Koetter: The Buccaneers fired coach Dirk Koetter after three seasons. The team announced the move shortly after completing a 5-11 season with a 34-32 loss to the Atlanta Falcons on Sunday. Koetter was 19-29 in three seasons at the helm. Tampa Bay began this season 2-0 as backup quarterback Ryan Fitzpatrick led them to wins over New Orleans and Philadelphia. The Buccaneers had three stretches with at least three straight losses and posted their second straight 5-11 record.
