HOUSTON – University of Houston senior Malik Fleming has been named to the preseason watch list for the Paul Hornung Award presented by Texas Roadhouse, the Louisville Sports Commission announced Thursday.
The defensive back enters his first fall with the Cougars after spending the last four seasons at East Carolina. There, the Valdosta, Ga., native played 46 games with the Pirates including being named All-American Athletic Conference Second Team in 2022 helped by three interceptions and an 80.1 defensive grade per Pro Football Focus – which ranked second among league cornerbacks. He also returned 19 punts for 134 yards including a 60-yard return against USF. In 2021, Fleming blocked a 42-yard field goal against Charleston Southern.
The Paul Hornung Award is given annually by the Louisville Sports Commission (LSC) to the most versatile player in major college football. The Award was created by the LSC in January 2010 with the support of the Golden Boy himself, Paul Hornung, a native and lifelong resident of Louisville and member of the College and Pro Football Halls of Fame.
In 2021, Houston's Marcus Jones took home the coveted award. The Consensus All-American led the nation with two punt return touchdowns and was tied for third nationally with two kickoff return touchdowns alongside five interceptions (third nationally).
Fleming was named to the East-West Shrine Bowl 1,000 and heads into the 2023 season with 105 career tackles, 15 career breakups and six career interceptions. A full list of Houston Football preseason honors can be found here.
