As busy recruiting weekend begins, Texas football team gets one pledge but loses another
Phoenix Mountain Pointe Christian's Christian Clark, right, committed to Texas on Thursday. He's a four-star recruit and the No. 23 running back prospect in the country. On the verge of a massive recruiting weekend, the Texas football team just received a commitment from one of the nation’s most coveted running backs in the class of 2024 but also lost a pledge from a longtime target. First, the good news for Texas fans: Christian Clark, a four-star running back from Phoenix, committed to the Longhorns on Thursday. His pledge came days after his official visit to Austin. Ranked as the No. 23 running back prospect in the nation in 247Sports’ composite ratings, the 5-foot-11, 195-pound Clark offers a versatile skill set. During his junior season at Mountain Pointe High School, he ran for 737 yards and 11 touchdowns and hauled in 37 passes for 368 yards and another five scores. Clark also fielded offers from schools including Oregon, Georgia and Florida State. But Texas also received some unwelcomed news on Thursday when longtime pledge Hunter Moddon announced on his social media accounts that he had reopened his recruiting. Moddon, a 6-foot, 175-pound athlete from Houston Clear Lake, had been committed to the Longhorns since September. Texas head coach Steve Sarkisian, with his team before the Orange-White spring game this year, received a commitment from four-star running back Christian Clark on Thursday but lost a pledge from Clear Lake athlete Hunter Moddon. Texas' 2024 class now sits at five players and is No. 62 nationally. Longhorns coach Steve Sarkisian and his staff are in the midst of a busy recruiting weekend. Earlier this week, Arizona defensive back Santana Wilson and Smithson Valley receiver Freddie Dubose Jr. pledged to Texas, joining three-star quarterback Trey Owens of Houston Cypress-Fairbanks and three-star punter Michael Kern of St. Thomas Aquinas High School in Florida. Multiple recruits are on official visits to Texas his weekend, and Clark hinted Thursday that the Longhorns’ 2024 class could grow in size and stature. “Texas recruiting is about to blow up with some big commits coming in last week and hopefully more to come this upcoming weekend,” Clark told On3 Sports. “I think we’ll make a huge push this month to be one of the top classes in the country.”
