Eagles ink complete draft class
Former South Dakota State Jackrabbits tight end Dallas Goedert was signed by the Eagles on Wednesday.
The Philadelphia Eagles signed tight end Dallas Goedert and the rest of their five-player NFL draft class on Wednesday.
Goedert, Philadelphia's second-round pick (No. 49) out of South Dakota State, heads the group that included cornerback Avonte Maddox, defensive end Josh Sweat and offensive linemen Matt Pryor and Jordan Mailata.
The defending Super Bowl champions made a trade with the Indianapolis Colts to move up three slots to nab Goedert, who posted back-to-back 1,000-yard seasons in 2016 and 2017 and had 13 touchdown catches in that span.
Philadelphia had a need for a backup to starting tight end Zach Ertz after releasing Brent Celek and losing Trey Burton via free agency.
Listed at 6-foot-5 and 265 pounds, Goedert was listed by NFLDraftScout.com's Dane Brugler as the top small-school prospect from non-FBS programs heading into the draft.
Maddox was taken in the fourth round out of Pittsburgh. He had eight interceptions and broke up 34 passes in four seasons with the Panthers before clocking a 4.39 in the 40 at the NFL Combine.
Sweat also went in the fourth round at No. 130 overall, five spots behind Maddox. The 6-5, 251-pounder registered 14.5 sacks and 29 tackles for loss at Florida State.
The Eagles added a pair of huge bodies in Pryor and Mailata, who were selected in the sixth and seventh rounds, respectively.
The 6-7, 338-pound Pryor started 32 of 47 games at TCU. He made 23 starts at right guard and eight at right tackle.
Mailata, at 6-8, 347 pounds, is a former professional rugby player in Australia. Despite his massive size, he ran the 40 in five seconds.
