Defense rules in Dolphins' win over Jets

Miami's offense managed only seven first downs and 168 total yards, but the Dolphins' defense came up big Sunday in a 13-6 win over the visiting New York Jets at Hard Rock Stadium. The only touchdown in the game came early in the fourth quarter when Miami rookie linebacker Jerome Baker returned an interception 25 yards with just under 11 minutes left in the game to give the Dolphins a 13-3 lead. New York rookie quarterback Sam Darnold threw four interceptions, giving him 11 for the season. He completed 21 of 39 pass attempts for 229 yards. Darnold's Miami counterpart, quarterback Brock Osweiler, was even less spectacular, completing 15 of 24 attempts for only 139 yards. The big difference -- Osweiler did not turn the ball over. Osweiler is now 2-2 as Ryan Tannehill's replacement. "I think I'm happy that we took care of the football," Dolphins coach Adam Gase said. "We didn't put ourselves in a bad position or put the defense in a bad position by creating a short field. They had to drive it a long way and our defense did a good job of either getting a turnover or making them punt. "We had a couple of opportunities and we missed them. One of those type of games where you get the right thing versus what they are doing and we just have to find a way to make those plays." After a scoreless first quarter, Jason Sanders got the Dolphins on the board first with a 43-yard field goal. Miami extended the lead to 6-0 on Sanders' 27-yard field goal. The Jets went into halftime trailing 6-3 thanks to Jason Myers' 48-yard field goal with 20 ticks of the clock showing. Miami (5-4) snapped a two-game skid while the Jets (3-6) lost for the third straight time. "It's the same, same, same stuff," Jets safety Jamal Adams said. "It's frustrating. I'm not going to hold my tongue for anything anymore. I'm not a loser. I don't do this for fantasy points. I do this for the love of the game. I'm passionate about this team and I believe in this team. "I'm sick of losing. Honestly, I'm sick of losing. I'm fed up with losing. ... It pisses me off every time. I'm not a loser. I want to get back on the winning track. We've lost three straight? Come on, man." A heavy rainstorm during the Duke-Miami game on Saturday left the Hard Rock Stadium field a muddy mess and there were some doubts if the field would be in playing shape. The grounds crew worked around the clock to get the field in good enough shape to host Sunday's game.
