Wisconsin Badgers quarterback Alex Hornibrook (12) will return to the lineup Saturday against Rutgers.
Wisconsin Badgers quarterback Alex Hornibrook (12) will return to the lineup Saturday against Rutgers.
Wisconsin quarterback Alex Hornibrook will return to the lineup for Saturday's game against Rutgers. A concussion forced Hornibrook to sit out last week's loss at Northwestern, but he was cleared from the concussion protocol and will get the start against Rutgers. The starter for the first seven games for the Badgers, Hornibrook is averaging 179.1 yards passing while throwing for 11 touchdowns against six interceptions. He is completing 59.6 percent of his passes. Hornibrook has dealt with concussion issues in the past, missing the 2016 Big Ten Championship Game against Penn State because of a concussion. He also was limited in the Cotton Bowl against Western Michigan that same year after suffering a concussion in the regular-season finale. Sophomore Jack Coan made his first career start in last week's loss. He finished 20 of 31 passes for 158 yards, one touchdown and no interceptions. Wisconsin is still hoping to grant a redshirt season to Coan because of a new NCAA rule that allows a player to appear in as many as four games before losing that year of eligibility. Last week marked Coan's first game of the season. He played in six games as a freshman a year ago, completing all five of his passes for 36 yards. The Badgers enter Saturday's matchup with a 5-3 overall record and 3-2 mark in the Big Ten. Rutgers is 1-7 and has lost all five conference games. --New Mexico senior linebacker Evahelotu Tohi, the team's leading tackler, has been suspended from after being involved in a fight that left teammate David Brown hospitalized. Brown, also a linebacker, reportedly was hit at least twice by Tohi in an altercation at a party and spent five days in a hospital. According to the Albuquerque Journal, "Brown suffered internal bleeding on the right side of his brain" as a result of the blows. No charges have been filed because Brown has refused to cooperate with police investigating the incident. "I was made aware of an incident that happened Saturday night involving two of our student-athletes," coach Bob Davie said in a statement. "Although all the details are still being gathered, I think it's appropriate at this time to suspend Evah Tohi from all team activities. The university will continue to work through proper procedures and once the process is completed, appropriate action will be taken." Tohi has 57 tackles this season to lead the Lobos. In last Saturday's loss to Utah State, he recovered a fumble for a touchdown. --Louisville coach Bobby Petrino announced in a press release on Friday that backup quarterback Jordan Travis has left the football program and decided to transfer. Travis, a three-star member of the Cardinals' 2018 recruiting class, was rated as the No. 25 dual-threat quarterback in the country. As a freshman this season, Jackson completed 4 of 9 passes for 71 yards and a touchdown with one interception. "Jordan Travis approached me Tuesday about transferring and we had a productive conversation about his future," Petrino said in a statement. "He talked about the possibility of getting closer to home and his family (in Florida), and we agreed that it might be a better situation for him personally. Jordan is a terrific young man and I wish him nothing but the best in his collegiate career." Since Travis played on fewer than four games, he can use his redshirt year this season and maintain four years of eligibility at whichever school he transfers to. WDRB-TV noted that Jackson had ascended to the No. 2 spot on the Cardinals' depth chart behind starter Jawon Pass. Pass and Malik Cunningham are the only two scholarship quarterbacks left on the Louisville roster.
