CFB notebook: Virginia Tech QB Jackson out indefinitely
Virginia Tech Hokies quarterback Josh Jackson might return late in the season.
Virginia Tech quarterback Josh Jackson is sidelined indefinitely with a fractured left fibula, coach Justin Fuente announced.
Jackson sustained the injury after a 19-yard run in the second half of Saturday's upset loss to Old Dominion. He was carted off the field and returned to the sideline on crutches with his leg in a protective boot.
Ryan Willis took over the Hokies' offense, which scored its final touchdown on the next drive before the Monarchs went on to post a 49-35 win over the Hokies.
Willis completed 9 of 18 passes for 131 yards and a touchdown. He also ran four times for 30 yards and is expected to start this week against Duke.
Jackson, who is scheduled to have surgery on Tuesday, has completed 62 percent of his passes for 575 yards with five touchdowns and one interception this season.
Fuente said it's possible Jackson could return "late this season."
--Northwestern sophomore running back Jeremy Larkin is retiring from football after being diagnosed with cervical stenosis, the team announced.
Larkin saw three specialists last week to confirm the diagnosis. Cervical stenosis is a narrowing in the upper part of the spine.
Larkin rushed for 346 yards and added another 127 on 19 receptions. He had five touchdowns for Northwestern, which opens Big Ten play when it hosts Michigan on Saturday.
--San Diego State running back Juwan Washington, who ranks fifth nationally in rushing yardage, is expected to be sidelined for six weeks with a fractured clavicle, the San Diego Union-Tribune reported.
Washington was injured in the second quarter of SDSU's 23-20 overtime win against Eastern Michigan on Saturday night at SDCCU Stadium. Washington had 12 carries for 61 yards in the first half against the Eagles.
He came into the game as the nation's fourth-leading rusher with 150.7 yards a game. For the season, Washington has rushed 99 times for 513 yards, which ranks fifth.
--South Florida freshman wide receiver/kick returner Terrence Horne has been diagnosed with a torn ACL and will miss the remainder of the 2018 season, the team confirmed to the Tampa Bay Times.
Horne sustained the injury during practice last week prior to South Florida's win over East Carolina.
Horne leads the FBS in kick return yardage this season with a staggering 47.0 per attempt.
In the season opener, Horne tied an NCAA single-game record by returning a pair of kicks for touchdowns against Georgia Tech.
