CFB notebook: Two Nebraska players hospitalized after workout

New Nebraska coach Scott Frost took responsibility for hospitalized players.
New Nebraska coach Scott Frost took responsibility for hospitalized players.
Nebraska wide receiver Tyjon Lindsey and defensive lineman Dylan Owen were hospitalized after suffering from over-exertion during a workout, the Lincoln Journal Star reported. The pair was treated for rhabdomyolysis, which is a muscle injury that could lead to serious complications such as renal (kidney) failure. Lindsey stayed in the hospital for three days and Owen for two. They were released to rejoin the team, coach Scott Frost told the newspaper. "Anything that happens in our program is ultimately my responsibility," Frost said. "Our strength coach and training room were coordinating to do absolutely the best they could to make sure the transition went smooth, but two kids that exerted themselves too far and had (rhabdomyolysis). "I want to make sure people understand that the health of our players is always going to be our primary concern. It's been kind of a scary deal and both kids are doing fine now." Nebraska recently began conditioning drills under new strength coach Zach Duval, who followed Frost from Central Florida in December. --Texas Tech went to the Mid-American Conference to get its new offensive coordinator. Western Michigan offensive coordinator Kevin Johns has been hired for the same position at Texas Tech, the school announced. In addition to being the Red Raiders' offensive coordinator, Johns will be their inside wide receivers coach. Johns replaces Eric Morris, who left Texas Tech to become the head coach at Incarnate Word. --A proposal that would allow college athletes to transfer without restriction if their coach is dismissed or leaves for another job is being considered for Division I, CBSSports.com reported. The proposal would also allow athletes to transfer without sitting out a season if the school is handed a postseason ban by the NCAA. As it stands now, coaches are able to block athletes from transferring to certain schools. Athletes are required to get a release from the school they are leaving to accept a scholarship at their new school. The only stipulation is that a transferring player cannot follow his coach to the coach's new school.
