Defensive coordinator Todd Orlando will receive a significant raise for his second season at Texas.
University of Texas defensive coordinator Todd Orlando is about to receive a hefty raise. The school's System Board of Regents is expected to approve several athletics-related contracts next week, with Orlando's contract to be amended to $1.7 million as part of a one-year extension until March 2021, per the Austin American-Statesman. Orlando joined head coach Tom Herman when he came over from Houston in November 2016. The 46-year-old Orlando was making $1.09 million in 2017. New co-offensive coordinator and line coach Herb Hand will receive a three-year contract at $640,000 per year at the meetings scheduled for Monday and Tuesday. --Cory Sanders was named to the coaching staff at Pittsburgh, one of three moves the school announced. Sanders will serve as safeties coach under Pat Narduzzi, who also promoted defensive line coach Charlie Partridge to assistant head coach. Last season, Sanders was the defensive backs coach at Western Michigan, helping Darius Phillips and Sam Beal earn All-Mid-American Conference honors. He also has four years of head coaching experience at the Division II level. Partridge is entering his second season with the Panthers after serving as head coach at Florida Atlantic for the previous three years. Narduzzi also brought in Paris Johnson as assistant director of player personnel. Johnson was the safeties coach at Savannah State last season. --Illinois named longtime NFL coach Gill Byrd to its staff, the school announced. Byrd, who spent all but one of the past 15 years as an assistant in the NFL, will serve as passing game coordinator and safeties coach under head coach Lovie Smith. Last season, Byrd was the defensive backs coach with the Buffalo Bills, who reached the playoffs for the first time since 1999. The Bills allowed only 13 touchdown passes, the second-fewest total in the league. The Fighting Illini also announced the promotion of defensive coordinator Hardy Nickerson to assistant head coach.
