Stanford is scraping for bodies at quarterback as the first session of spring practice got underway Tuesday. Sophomore K.J. Costello, expected to be the team's starter, will miss spring practice due to an injury, Cardinal coach David Shaw announced. Costello is dealing with a hip injury, Sports Illustrated reported, citing a source. The absence of Costello will leave Stanford with no scholarship quarterbacks on the roster for spring practice. Keller Chryst, who entered last season as the starter before being replaced by Costello, already has announced his intention to transfer. He reportedly visited Tennessee last weekend. Davis Mills, expected to serve as the backup to Costello, also will miss the spring sessions while he recuperates from an injury to his ACL. That leaves the Cardinal with only one quarterback on the roster -- walk-on Jack Richardson, who has not attempted a pass. --The Los Angeles County district attorney's office has decided not to file felony charges against USC wide receiver Joseph Lewis, a spokesman for the district attorney told ESPN. The spokesman said Lewis' case is being reviewed as a possible misdemeanor after being referred to the Los Angeles City attorney's office. Lewis was arrested Feb. 12 on a felony domestic battery charge. USC suspended Lewis from all football-related activities as a result of the arrest. --Texas tight end Garrett Gray has left the team and will not return to the school for his senior season, according to a media report. A school official confirmed to the Austin American-Statesman on Tuesday that Garrett no longer is with the team. The 6-foot-4, 240-pound Garrett had four receptions in the season opener against Maryland but suffered a knee injury the following week and never made it back to the field. Garrett, who did not have a reception in each of his first two seasons with the Longhorns, was suspended for the school's matchup against Missouri in the Texas Bowl because of a violation of team rules.
