CFB notebook: Second notice of claim filed against Rodriguez
Then-Arizona Wildcats coach Rich Rodriguez against the Arizona State Sun Devils during the Territorial Cup at Sun Devil Stadium.
Former Arizona football coach Rich Rodriguez received a second notice of claim of a hostile work environment against him by the woman who filed the original claim last month.
The second notice of claim includes Rodriguez's wife and the University of Arizona seeking $8.5 million.
In the first claim seeking $7.5 million, filed Dec. 29 with the Arizona Attorney General's Office, the woman, Rodriguez's former administrative assistant, alleged the former coach ran a hostile work place. She said Rodriguez forced her to keep an extramarital affair secret while also groping and attempting to kiss her, among other actions that made her feel uncomfortable.
Rodriguez was fired without cause by Arizona on Jan. 2.
The new claim, which includes the woman's husband as a claimant and was filed with the Arizona Board of Regents on Friday, outlines many of the same allegations as the first one but adds allegations of slander, defamation and false light, invasion of privacy, and intentional infliction of emotional distress.
--Miami Hurricanes cornerback Malek Young, who started 10 games as a sophomore last season, will have to end his career because of a neck/verterbrae injury suffered in the Orange Bowl.
"After discussions with my family and the UM medical staff, we have determined that my football career should come to an end," Young said in a statement released by the school. "I look forward to getting healthy, working towards my degree and continuing to support my teammates, as I know they will continue to support me."
--The Heisman Trophy won by former Colorado running back Rashaan Salaam in 1994 sold for a record $399,608 at an auction.
The proceeds will go toward CTE-related medical research in Salaam's name. Salaam died in December 2016 at age 42, but he had sold the trophy two years earlier. His death was ruled a suicide.
The previous record sale for a Heisman award was $395,240 that was paid for Bruce P. Smith's 1941 trophy.
--California senior running back Tre Watson is planning to finish his career at another school.
Watson said last week he will seek another school that is a good fit as a graduate transfer for his final season of eligibility.
The 5-foot-11, 205-pound Watson had his best season for the Golden Bears in 2016, when he ran for 709 yards, averaging 5.0 yards per carry, and four touchdowns. Last fall, Watson suffered a lower-body injury that hampered him for much of the season. He finished his Cal career with eight starts in 37 games.
--Oregon hired Jim Mastro to be its next running backs coach and run-game coordinator, making him the third assistant coach from Washington State to join the staff of the Pac-12 rival Ducks.
New Oregon coach Mario Cristobal was able to pry Mastro away from Mike Leach's program at Washington State despite Mastro coaching with the Cougars in the six years (2012-17) in which Leach has coached in Pullman.
"We are thrilled to add Jim to the staff," Cristobal said in a statement released by Oregon on Sunday. "He has extraordinary leadership skills which will be of great benefit in developing our talented group of running backs. Jim possesses a wealth of experience both coaching and recruiting on the West Coast, and he has consistently been a tremendous innovator on the offensive side of the ball."
