CFB notebook: K-State gives Snyder 5-year deal

Kansas State coach Bill Snyder received a five-year contract extension, the school announced Thursday. The new deal will carry through the 2022 season for the 78-year-old Snyder, who will be entering his 27th season with the Wildcats. "It has been a pleasure watching our football program up close over the past year and seeing one of the greatest coaches in the history of college football continue to positively impact student-athletes while also producing winning seasons on a yearly basis," said Kansas State athletic director Gene Taylor. "With this new contract, we felt that it was important to recognize his commitment to our football program, and we look forward to his continued leadership." Snyder, in his second stint with the Wildcats, led the team to an 8-5 record last season, which was capped by a 35-17 victory over UCLA in the Cactus Bowl. It was the eighth consecutive bowl appearance for Kansas State under Snyder, who is 210-110-1 at the school. Snyder will earn $3.45 million for the upcoming season and will receive $300,000 raises in both 2019 and 2020. --Brett Kean, competing for the starting quarterback job at South Florida, will not face a suspension to start the season. Bulls head coach Charlie Strong on Wednesday confirmed that the NCAA cleared Kean of an academic-related issue that was expected to sideline him for two games. The television station reported that Kean initially faced a four-game suspension, but that had been reduced to a two-game ban. Kean subsequently filed a waiver to appeal the punishment. Kean is battling Arizona State transfer Blake Barnett and Chris Oladokun for USF's starting quarterback job. The top backup to Quinton Flowers the past two seasons, Kean has appeared in 14 games during that time, completing 25 of 37 passes for 193 yards. --Wisconsin senior kicker Rafael Gaglianone is out indefinitely with an injury to his right leg, the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel reported. Gaglianone, who was held out of practice for a number of days before going on the injury list, also is dealing with discomfort in his back, according to the newspaper. The second-most accurate kicker in school history, Gaglianone has converted 60 of 75 field goal attempts for the Badgers. He has nailed 23 of his last 26 attempts. Gaglianone appeared in 14 games in 2017 and was successful on 16 of 18 field goal attempts. He converted all 59 extra-point chances. The back discomfort could be a major concern for Gaglianone, who was limited to three games in 2016 before undergoing back surgery. He also missed spring practice in 2015 due to an ailing back. --USC linebacker Porter Gustin received some positive news on the medical front. Gustin, who suffered a meniscus tear in his left knee during Tuesday's practice, will undergo surgery and is expected to miss two to four weeks, according to USC's official Twitter feed. Multiple media outlets reported Wednesday that Gustin was expected to be sidelined longer, with a likely timetable of four to six weeks to recover. The 6-foot-5, 255-pound Gustin has appeared in 28 games in three seasons with the Trojans, recording 14.0 sacks and 23 tackles for loss. --LSU suspended linebacker Tyler Taylor indefinitely after learning of his alleged role in the burglary of a pawn shop in Georgia, according to a published report. The Baton Rouge Advocate reported Wednesday night that the 19-year-old Taylor was arrested in late May in connection to the burglary in early January. Taylor, who allegedly served as the getaway driver, is facing charges of conspiracy to commit a crime, party to a crime and theft by receiving stolen property. All three crimes listed on Taylor's arrest warrants are considered felonies. Taylor recorded 32 tackles and 1.5 sacks in 13 games last season. He was expected to take on an expanded role in his second year with the Tigers. --A 17-year-old girl was arrested in connection with a burglary at the home of Nebraska football coach Scott Frost. The teenager was found to be in possession of an Oregon Ducks shoe that was among the items stolen from Frost's home last month, the Lincoln Journal-Star reported. Lincoln police told the newspaper that there come be arrests to come. About $50,000 worth of memorabilia, including shoes, football helmets and artwork, were taken in the July 2i burglary of Frost's unoccupied home in Lincoln. Initial reports listed 14 championship rings among the stolen items, but those were later found.
