CFB Notebook: Georgia Tech extends Johnson's contract through 2022
Head coach Paul Johnson, who has been in charge at Georgia Tech for 10 seasons, has been extended through 2022.
Head coach Paul Johnson of Georgia Tech has agreed to a contract extension through the 2022 season, the school announced on Friday.
The 60-year-old Johnson has a 75-54 record in 10 seasons with the Yellow Jackets, including three ACC championship games, and a 3-5 record in bowl games.
"Aside from Bobby Dodd, no head coach in Georgia Tech football history has won more games in his first 10 seasons than Paul Johnson," athletic director Todd Stansbury said in a statement.
"By extending Coach Johnson's contract through 2022, we not only keep one of the most successful coaches in our illustrious history right here on The Flats, but we also ensure continued stability within our coaching staff."
Johnson coached Georgia Tech to a victory over Clemson in the 2009 ACC Championship Game, the Yellow Jackets' only conference title since 1990. He was selected the ACC's coach of the Year in 2008, 2009 and 2014.
--Auburn quarterback Jarrett Stidham has been ruled out of Saturday's scrimmage, but is making progress from minor shoulder surgery.
While Stidham will not play in the Tigers' A-Day scrimmage, head coach Gus Malzahn told the school's official website that will participate in drills Saturday.
"We'll start out with a 10-minute 7-on-7," Malzahn said. "Jarrett Stidham will be a part of that. He will not be a part of the actual scrimmage, and then we'll go ahead and start our scrimmage."
Stidham underwent what the school described as a "minor procedure" on his non-throwing shoulder in January, but he has been involved in drills throughout spring practice.
Stidham started every game under center for the SEC West champion Tigers in 2017. Stidham passed for 3,158 yards and 18 touchdowns last season, becoming the second Auburn quarterback to throw for 3,000-plus yards in a season.
--Quarterback Paul Tyson, great-grandson of legendary Alabama coach Paul "Bear" Bryant, has committed to play for the Crimson Tide.
The 6-foot-4, 210-pound Tyson, who is ranked in the ESPN Junior 300 and considered the No. 212 prospect in the Class of 2019, made the announcement on Twitter.
"It's a family thing, but I definitely tried to look past that and just realize that I'm going to be here for four years and not let that decide where I go to college," said Tyson, who plays at Hewitt-Trussville high school in Trussville, Ala. "I let the fan out of me, basically. I visited all different places and stayed open and just wanted to go where home is, and that's Alabama."
Tyson, who also visited Michigan, LSU, North Carolina State, Duke, Kentucky and Tennessee, took another visit to Alabama on Thursday before making his commitment.
--The Atlantic Coast reached agreement on a 10-year extension of its deal with Charlotte, N.C., to play the ACC Championship Game at Bank of America Stadium through 2030, the league announced.
Seven of the last eight ACC title games have been played in Charlotte, but the conference moved the 2016 game to Orlando, Fla., in protest of North Carolina's controversial HB2 law that put restrictions on transgender bathroom use.
"We feel like we've truly found a home for (the title game), where it's appropriately supported on a consistent basis," ACC Commissioner John Swofford said.
The seven ACC Championship Games played at Bank of America Stadium, which has a capacity of 75,525, have averaged more than 70,000 fans with four sellouts, according to Swofford.
