CFB notebook: Day promoted to OC at Ohio State
New UCLA head coach Chip Kelly completed his coaching staff.
Despite reports that Ryan Day was under consideration to become the Tennessee Titans' offensive coordinator, Ohio State announced Tuesday that Day will remain on the Buckeyes' coaching staff and has been promoted to offensive coordinator.
Day completed his first season as quarterbacks coach and co-offensive coordinator in 2017. It is unclear what that will mean for Kevin Wilson, who held the title of offensive coordinator at Ohio State in 2017
"Day will continue to coach the Ohio State quarterbacks and work with Kevin Wilson to lead the Ohio State offense with additional adjustments to (Wilson's) responsibilities forthcoming," the school said in a statement.
Wilson called the offensive plays during games in 2017, and Day may have that role in 2018. Day has been an offensive coordinator before, serving in that role at Temple in 2012 and at Boston College in 2013-14.
--UCLA coach Chip Kelly rounded out his coaching staff by naming Dana Bible as his quarterbacks coach, the school announced.
Kelly also finalized the hiring of Roy Manning to coach special teams and outside linebackers, and Vince Oghobaase to coach the defensive line.
Bible will be reunited with Kelly. Bible ended a three-year retirement to join Kelly's staff on the San Francisco 49ers in 2016. The 64-year-old Bible was a quarterbacks coach with the Cincinnati Bengals from 1990-92 and served as the offensive coordinator with the Philadelphia Eagles in 1998.
Bible also was an offensive coordinator at Boston College, where he worked with Matt Ryan, and at North Carolina State, where he coached Russell Wilson and Mike Glennon.
--Notre Dame named Jeff Quinn its offensive line coach, the school announced.
Quinn replaces Harry Hiestand, who was named the offensive line coach for the Chicago Bears on Jan. 11 after six seasons with the Fighting Irish.
A head coach at the University of Buffalo from 2010-2014, Quinn spent the past three seasons at Notre Dame, serving as offensive analyst in 2017.
Quinn also was the offensive coordinator and offensive line coach at the University of Cincinnati from 2007-09, helping the Bearcats go undefeated in his final season.
--The gun that Washington State quarterback Tyler Hilinski used to kill himself belonged to a former teammate, according to the Pullman (Wash.) Police Department.
Police did not identify the owner of the rifle. Hilinski died of a self-inflicted gunshot wound to the head on Jan. 16, the Whitman County Coroner's Office said.
"It appears Hilinski took the rifle without the teammate's knowledge, on or before Friday, January 12," Pullman Police Chief Gary Jenkins said in a statement.
Jenkins said state law prohibits the release of a suicide note to anyone except family, although he added the "investigation did not reveal any particular motive for suicide."
