CFB notebook: Alabama's Hurts frustrated

Jalen Hurts is competing with Tua Tagovailoa for the Alabama starting quarterback job but is frustrated with how the competition is being handled. Speaking for reporters for the first time since getting benched at halftime of the national championship game against Georgia in January, Hurts said he is annoyed by what he said are "rumors", "speculation" and "people making decisions for me." "When I look at the things that are being said -- and I'm not looking for it, it comes to me -- when I see that those things are being said, that's silly because, 'He said this, he said that, maybe Coach (Nick) Saban said this'," Hurts told reporters at Alabama's media day Saturday. "Whoever said whatever, what did Jalen say? Not a thing." Hurts also said he was "shocked" when Saban said at SEC media days that he had "no idea" if Hurts would be on the roster for the season opener against Louisville on Sept. 1 in Orlando. After the comments, Saban and Hurts met to clear the air. Hurts said he was intent on staying and graduating in December regardless if he was starting. --Two former Rutgers football players received 12-year prison sentences for armed robbery Friday. Tejay Johnson, a 26-year-old former cornerback and Andre Boggs a 22-year-old former cornerback pled guilty to armed robberies targeting other students for drugs and cash. According to NJ.com, Johnson spent nearly seven minutes apologizing inside a Middlesex County courtroom. He said he made a "complete fool of himself" and ruined his family name. Johnson was facing a significantly longer sentence before cutting a deal with prosecutors in January. --Louisville senior wide receiver Jaylen Smith underwent an emergency appendectomy Friday morning, the school announced. No timetable was listed for the return of Smith, who was a first-team All-ACC selection last season. Smith, a preseason pick on the All-ACC team, had 60 receptions for 980 yards and 10 touchdowns last season for the Cardinals, who have to replace star quarterback Lamar Jackson in 2018. --LSU suspended sophomore guard Edward Ingram indefinitely for an unspecified violation of team rules. Tigers head coach Ed Orgeron made the announcement Friday, per the Times-Picayune of New Orleans. LSU opened its training camp Saturday. Ingram appeared in all 13 games last season, starting the final 12. Orgeron will move Damien Lewis into Ingram's slot at right guard.
