Donte Kent Named to Bronko Nagurski Trophy Watch List

MOUNT PLEASANT, Mich.—Central Michigan junior cornerback Donte Kent was named to the Bronko Nagurski Trophy Watch List by the Football Writers Association of America, the organization announced on Tuesday afternoon. The FWAA released its 2023 Watch List, which includes 96 FBS players from around the nation. Kent is one of four Mid-American Conference players on the Watch List.

The Bronko Nagurski Trophy has been awarded annually since 1993 to the collegiate football defensive player judged by the membership of the FWAA to be the best in the National Collegiate Athletic Association. The FWAA and the Charlotte Touchdown Club will announce finalists for the 2023 trophy on Nov. 15 and the winner will be unveiled Dec. 4 at the Bronko Nagurski Awards Banquet in Charlotte, N.C.

Kent is a consensus preseason All-MAC selection heading into the 2023 season. A First Team All-MAC cornerback in 2022, Kent was named a FWAA Freshman All-America team pick in 2021. Over his two-year, 30-game career, he has made 124 tackles (99 solo), 1.5 tackles for loss, 1.0 sack, two interceptions, 30 pass breakups, 32 passes defended, two forced fumbles, a fumble recovery, and a blocked kick.
As a sophomore, Kent played in all 12 games with 11 starts at cornerback. He concluded the year ranked No. 9 nationally and No. 2 in the MAC in passes defended (15, 1.4 per game) and finished the year with 51 tackles (39 solo), 1.5 tackles for loss, 1.0 sack, and a team-high 15 pass breakups. He concluded the year ranked sixth on the team in total tackles (51) and third on the team in solo tackles (39). He also forced a fumble and blocked a kick.
Kent is a Harrisburg, Pa. native who played high school football at Harrisburg H.S.
Central Michigan begins preseason practice later today.
