Badgers lose DL Rand for season

Wisconsin defensive end Garrett Rand has been ruled out for the 2018 season due to an Achilles injury.

Rand was hurt during offseason workouts and had been listed as out indefinitely, but Badgers defensive line coach Inoke Breckterfield told ESPN that the injury is season-ending, per the Wisconsin State Journal.

Although Rand recorded 13 tackles in 14 games last season, he was projected as a starter in 2018 after Wisconsin lost defensive linemen Conor Sheehy, Alec James and Chikwe Obasih.

In addition, sophomore defensive lineman Isaiahh Loudermilk underwent knee surgery this spring but he is expected to return sometime during the upcoming season.

Rand primarily played at nose tackle in each of the past two seasons before he was shifted to defensive end during offseason workouts.

Defensive coordinator Jim Leonhard told the newspaper prior to the injury that Rand could be in line for an expanded role due to his positional versatility.
