REPLAY: NCAA explains the penalties it handed down to Tennessee football
The NCAA revealed penalties for Tennessee football, former coach Jeremy Pruitt and members of his staff on Friday. Read the latest update here. The NCAA put University of Tennessee football on probation for five years, but the program avoided a postseason ban. Former coach Jeremy Pruitt, fired in 2021, was hit with a six-year show-cause penalty in the verdict of the yearslong NCAA infractions case that found more than 200 violations of NCAA rules by at least a dozen staff members that went unreported in a two-year period. Pruitt's penalty for his part in the 18 highest-level violations committed during his three-season tenure as UT coach will keep him out of college coaching for the foreseeable future. A show-cause penalty means a university cannot hire a coach or recruiter without NCAA approval during the length of the ban. Pruitt's show-cause includes a 100% suspension for the first year of employment should an NCAA school hire in him in any athletics position. The NCAA held a press conference to discuss its Committee on Infraction's decision. Watch a replay in the stream below. Here is a previous version of this story: The NCAA enforcement staff alleged that 18 highest-level violations occurred under Pruitt's watch from 2018 to early 2021. UT fired Pruitt and other assistants for cause in January 2021. The NCAA already agreed to show-cause penalties for former assistant coaches Brian Niedermeyer (five years), Shelton Felton (four); director of player personnel Drew Hughes (four); and student assistant Michael Magness (three). A show-cause penalty means a university cannot hire a coach or recruiter without NCAA approval during the length of the ban. Pruitt, his wife, Casey Pruitt, former assistant Derrick Ansley, recruiting director Bethany Gunn and assistant recruiting Chantryce Boone are among the parties who could receive penalties today. The case has spanned almost three years since a tip came to UT Chancellor Donde Plowman's office in November 2020. It will end today, aside from the possibility of an appeals process.
