Trieu: Michigan State football welcomes more visitors after successful weekend

Last weekend’s official visits at Michigan State were a success. Coming off the weekend, the Spartans have received new Crystal Ball predictions for four-star running back Anthony Carrie and safety Reggie Powers, who were both on campus. Powers had been heavily favored to go to Ohio State, but is now canceling his end-of-June official with the Buckeyes. In addition, the Spartans made good progress with wide receiver Tra’Mar Harris and four-star in-state linebacker Jeremiah Beasley. For Beasley, the predictions were mostly in favor of Michigan, but the Spartans and now Missouri are providing a serious threat. With it being Father’s Day this weekend, there are fewer visitors, but it is still a notable group of three: ▶ Decker DeGraaf, TE, Glendora (California): DeGraaf is a 6-foot-4, 230-pound receiving threat who already has taken officials to Utah and Arkansas, and will be at Washington the weekend following MSU. Arkansas set the bar high during its visit. This will be DeGraaf’s first time at Michigan State, so it is difficult to peg where the Spartans stand coming in, other than he was interested enough to use one of his officials on them and says he wants to see how he fits in their offense and meet the coaches. He plans to commit this summer, but has not set a specific date yet. ▶ Miles O’Neill, QB, Princeton (New Jersey) Hun School: The Crystal Ball picks are heavily in favor of Texas A&M, now following O’Neill’s official with the Aggies. He also went to Virginia and has Boston College the weekend of the 23rd. Boston College and the Spartans are locked in a bit of a quarterback derby as both schools also are recruiting Henry Hasselbeck, who visited Michigan State the first weekend of June. O’Neill previously has been to Michigan State for an unofficial. O’Neill is a 6-foot-5, 220-pound prospect who is fairly mobile for a bigger prospect. ▶ Karsen Konkel, TE, Pinckneyville (Illinois): The Spartans were part of a wave of offers for Konkel, who was not on the national radar until April. While he has been more quiet with his recruitment, we know Illinois received an official visit and Indiana and Virginia Tech are other programs he is interested in. But tight ends coach Ted Gilmore’s trip way out to Pinckneyville early in his rise was important to the Spartans’ chances. Upcoming announcement dates ▶ June 20: Mukwonago (Wisconsin) offensive lineman Nathan Roy chooses between UCLA, Minnesota and Michigan State. He took an official to Michigan State last weekend. ▶ June 24: Fort Wayne (Indiana) North Side athlete Brauntae Johnson makes his choice. The Spartans were supposed to have gotten him in for an official, but word is that he did not make it to campus. That likely means the choice is Notre Dame, which has turned the heat up with him of late. ▶ June 29: Belleville linebacker Jeremiah Beasley decides and it is essentially down to Michigan State, Michigan and Missouri. The Tigers have surged and the Spartans seem to have momentum also, but the predictions side with Michigan. His brother Maliq Carr is on the Spartan roster and he has been a frequent visitor to campus. ▶ July 7: River Rouge wide receiver Nick Marsh will decide between Penn State, Kansas, Auburn, Oregon and Michigan State. He was a one-time Spartan commit and they could get him back, but Penn State is beginning to trend. Marsh will take an official with Michigan State later this month.
