‘Coin flip at best?’ Will Foley WR stick with Bama commit or flip to Auburn?
As Auburn and Alabama head into big recruiting weekends, Foley wide receiver Perry Thompson continues to be one of the hottest names.
Thompson has been committed to the Crimson Tide since June of 2022 but last week told AL.com that his final decision was up in the air between Alabama and Iron Bowl rival Auburn.
He is scheduled to be at Auburn’s Big Cat Weekend on Saturday.
“I was told months ago, by some good sources, that if Auburn was going to pull off an Iron Bowl flip that Perry was the most flippable compared to a Sterling Dixon, certainly compared to Ryan Williams,” said John Garcia Jr., national college recruiting analyst for Rivals.
“Perry has taken I think more visits to Auburn than Tuscaloosa. You start tracking those things and you feel like it’s maybe in Auburn’s favor if not a coin flip at best from the Alabama side of things. That one feels like a matter of when or if a decommitment is made and, if that happens, obviously Auburn becomes the overwhelming favorite.”
A Class 7A first-team wide receiver as a junior, the 6-foot-4, 210-pound Thompson caught 87 passes for 1,059 yards and 9 touchdowns for the Lions. He also had a pair of interceptions on defense.
He has played a lot of defense in 7-on-7 events for the Lions this summer, but Garcia said that is not likely to be his best spot on the next level.
“He’s so big,” Garcia said. “The 6-foot-4 safety doesn’t really have a home in the secondary anymore. I don’t know ceiling wise that that is the place for him, but he’s certainly athletic enough to do it.”
Thompson, a 5-star prospect, is ranked by On3 as the No. 3 senior recruit in the state. The Top 247 rankings have him at No. 2, one spot ahead of Texas A&M WR commit Cameron Coleman of Central-Phenix City. Garcia’s Rivals has Thompson at No. 4 and Coleman at No. 1.
“I like him. I like him a lot,” Garcia said of Thompson. “We have him in the top 100 overall, and he profiles that way. I think he can be a big-time possession guy who is better after the catch. That used to be a negative, and now it’s not. Teams are winning with those types of guys.”
Thompson told AL.com that any final decision would come down to the relationships he has at the two schools. He has not announced a timeline for any possible decision.
