Former Oregon State star Isaiah Hodgins said he played in N.Y. Giants’ playoff game with a broken foot
Isaiah Hodgins posted a breakout season with the New York Giants in 2022 and looks to build on his success in 2023.
The wide receiver and former Oregon State star became a favorite target for quarterback Daniel Jones during the second half of the season and into the playoffs. Hodgins came through with a career performance during the Giants’ 31-24 win over the Minnesota Vikings in a Wild Card game last season.
Hodgins caught eight passes for a career-high 105 yards and a touchdown in the game. What made his performance even more impressive is the second-year player revealed he played on a slightly fractured foot. Hodgins initially thought the injury was a high ankle sprain.
“I thought it was just like a high ankle sprain - the ankle was all black and blue,” Hodgins said during an interview on the “2nd Wind” podcast. “ ‘Dabs’ (head coach Brian Daboll) was all scared. Everyone was like, ‘Oh, you gonna play?’ "
Hodgins suffered the injury on the Friday before the game and the ankle was heavily wrapped going into the game, limiting his lateral movement.
“It was like the third quarter of that game, and I was saying, ‘Hey, if I have to run like an end cut, like we gotta switch sides cuz I can’t plant that deep off this foot,” Hodgins said. “I could do short, intermediate stuff. And I was just like dug in through like the whole time.”
The ankle was swollen, but Hodgins was determined to play and contribute. Hodgins was still trying to make an impression.
A sixth-round pick (No. 207) by the Buffalo Bills in the 2022 NFL draft, Hodgins appeared in two games before the Bills released him on Nov. 1. The Giants signed him the following day and he quickly became a go-to receiver for Jones. He finished the regular season with 33 catches for 351 yards and his four touchdowns was tied for the team lead.
He signed a one-year deal with the Giants reportedly worth at least $825,000 for the 2023 season. If Hodgins can improve on his 2022 season, a bigger contract could be in his future.
