Michigan loses recruiting battle to SEC school for 2024 four-star OT Bennett Warren
Michigan’s football program has had a rough couple of days on the recruiting trail.
After losing a battle to Ohio State for 2024 four-star cornerback Aaron Scott on Sunday night, the Wolverines missed on Sugar Land (Texas) Fort Bend Christian Academy four-star offensive tackle Bennett Warren on Monday. The No. 143 overall prospect and top-10 tackle nationally, per the 247Sports Composite rankings, committed to Tennessee over other finalists Michigan, Oklahoma and Texas A&M.
Warren took official visits to all four schools in June, including Michigan on June 9. The Wolverines were trending for the 6-foot, 7 1/2-inch, 330-pounder shortly after the visit, but Tennessee appeared to seize control of his recruitment after a trip to Knoxville later that month.
Meanwhile, Michigan continued to pursue Copperas Cove (Texas) four-star tackle Michael Uini to round out its offensive line group for this cycle. The Wolverines were favored to land the No. 149 overall prospect in the week leading up to his commitment date, but momentum swung in Georgia’s favor shortly before he verbally pledged to the Bulldogs on June 30.
With Michigan potentially losing a handful of offensive linemen after the 2023 season, the position has been a main priority in the 2024 class. The Wolverines picked up five commitments -- three tackles and two interior linemen -- before May but have been looking to add a sixth.
Although there is still just over four months until signing day, it appears they might have to settle for five. Tackle Andrew Sprague is the highest ranked of the commits at No. 155 overall, followed by tackle Blake Frazier (No. 171), guard Luke Hamilton (No. 364), tackle Ben Roebuck (No. 480) and center Jake Guarnera (No. 491).
Overall, the Wolverines have the fourth-ranked class in the country with 26 commits.
