Kellen Moore’s days in L.A. appear numbered. What’s next NFL job for Boise State legend?

1/26/2024
Former Boise State quarterback Kellen Moore seems close to landing his next NFL gig — and it would be his third team in three years.
Moore interviewed for the Eagles’ vacancy at offensive coordinator on Thursday, according to ESPN’s Jeremy Fowler. The Cleveland Browns also requested permission to interview Moore on Thursday, according to NFL Network’s Tom Pelissero.
Moore just wrapped up his first season as the Los Angeles Chargers’ offensive coordinator. Their head coach, Brandon Staley, was fired in December, but Moore hasn’t officially been relieved of his duties. He interviewed for the head coaching vacancy with the team, but the Chargers hired Michigan coach Jim Harbaugh on Wednesday.
Moore’s days in Los Angeles now appear to be numbered. The Chargers denied the Bears’ request to interview him earlier this week, but the franchise now is open to him interviewing with other teams, Pelissero reported on Thursday.
The Chargers went 5-12 on the season. Under Moore’s direction, the offense ranked No. 13 in the league with 232.8 passing yards a game and No. 25 with 96.6 rushing yards a game. Star quarterback Justin Herbert missed the final four games of the regular season after getting hurt against the Denver Broncos.
Moore owns the most wins by a quarterback in NCAA history after going 50-3 as Boise State’s starter from 2008 to 2011. He also ranks No. 2 in NCAA history with 142 career touchdown passes, behind former Houston quarterback Case Keenum, who finished his career with 155.
Moore still holds records at Boise State for career touchdown passes (142), passing yards (14,667), completions (1,157) and attempts (1,658). He was Western Athletic Conference Freshman of the Year in 2008, WAC Offensive Player of the Year in 2009 and 2010, and Mountain West Offensive Player of the Year in 2011.
In 2011, he became the only player in Boise State history to be named a Heisman Trophy finalist. Former Baylor quarterback Robert Griffin III won the Heisman that year. Moore finished No. 8 in the voting, one spot behind Keenum and one spot ahead of quarterback Russell Wilson.
Moore went undrafted in 2012 but spent six seasons as a backup quarterback for the Detroit Lions and Dallas Cowboys. He began his coaching career in Dallas in 2018, was named the team’s offensive coordinator in 2019 and held the job until he parted ways with the Cowboys after the 2022-23 season.
