Shelby Harris

DT, DE · Illinois State
A football and basketball star out of Milwaukee, Harris redshirted at Wisconsin in 2009 before transferring to Illinois State. He played in all 11 games, including eight starts, and was named to the All-Newcomer Team in the Missouri Valley Football Conference in 2010. He started six of nine games at defensive tackle the following season, recording 49 tackles. Harris stepped up his game in 2012, starting all 13 games and ranking fifth in the MVFC with 16 tackles for loss to earn first team all-conference honors. However, he was dismissed from the program for conduct detrimental to the team and did not play in 2013. He worked out at Northwestern's pro day on March 28, running a 4.88 40-yard dash and posting a 32-inch vertical to go with 25 reps on the 225-pound bench press.

strengths

Good overall athlete. A bit undersized, but rarely takes a down off and can serve as an interior rusher on passing downs. Good versatility that could provide an NFL team with a backup across the defensive line, especially if he can bulk up a bit.

weaknesses

Reasons behind departure from two schools requires investigation. Character red flags? Did not regularly face NFL-caliber competition at Illinois State and will face a big learning curve in the NFL. Did not consistently dominate lowel level of competition. Needs technique work.
