His senior season, Barnes threw for 2,615 yards, 37 touchdowns and had just 10 interceptions. Playing in the U.S. Army All-American Bowl for top high school players in San Antonio in January, Barnes completed 7-of-13 passes for 117 yards and a touchdown pass as the West defeated the East, 35-3. As a junior, the 6-5, 225-pound Barnes passed Los Alamitos High School to a top ten national ranking by completing 155 of 265 passes for 2,246 yards and 20 touchdowns. His career numbers show over 4,800 yards passing, 57 touchdowns and just 20 interceptions.
