Adell Duckett

DE · Texas Tech
Adell is an athletic edge rusher who may not have the ideal size for the classic 4-3 defensive end position, but shows good effort. He has above average explosion off the ball, good lateral quickness and adequate change of direction agility. He added close to fifteen pounds of bulk during the 2004 offseason, but may not have much more room for additional growth. He shows inconsistencies with his hand usage, especially when attempting to shed. Duckett is best playing off the edge, as he fails to use his hands to keep blockers from getting into his body. When he stays low in his pads, he can work down the line and cause problems squeezing into the backfield. When he gets too high, offensive tackles are able to lock on and wash him out. He shows good hustle when he breaks free to get to the quarterback, but is generally stalemated and gets frustrated when trying to power through in-line blocks. His lack of hand extension causes him to struggle vs. double teams, as he lacks the bulk, lower leg drive and hand jolt to power through. Duckett is at his best when he is able beat the offensive tackle up field and race around the corner. He is also effective at beating the tackle to the inside when his swim move causes the blocker to overcompensate outside. Adell has decent acceleration down the line and can be a disruptive force if he can slip past the offensive linemen. He shows good pass coverage ability, leaping skills and backpedal to possibly convert to a linebacker in a 3-4 defense. He moves pretty well in space. He takes decent angles in pursuit, but because of size issues, fails to get leverage and can be stonewalled off the play by the larger blockers. I doubt if he will be able to generate the strong anchor he will need at the point of attack in a base NFL defense. Duckett has shown maturity in recent years, but he did need structure earlier in his career and needs to be pushed by hard coaching to get the best out of his ability. He needs to play with a nastier attitude and seems hesitate to step up, stack and control when asked to plug the inside rush lanes. His short area burst off the edge will generally gain him penetration into the backfield, but this is not the type of player that can consistently deliver rip, swim and club moves to beat the offensive linemen off the snap. The coaches cite his groin injury in 2004 for some of his marginal performances, but even before that injury, he did not show much urgency in his play. His up-and-down motor is a bit of a concern and his less than adequate long pursuit speed will not make him an inviting prospect as a situational pass rusher. A lack of size, inconsistent motor, marginal hand usage and just decent timed speed should see him still be on the boards later in the draft.

2003: Missed the second half of the New Mexico game with a slight knee sprain (held out as a precaution). 2004: Suffered a groin strain in the fourth quarter vs. Kansas that forced him to sit out the following contest vs. Oklahoma.
