Derek Schouman

FB, H-BACK/TE · Boise State
A clutch receiver for the Broncos, Schouman's solid blocking skills, along with a lack of ideal height for tight end, could see him shift to fullback at the next level. He has battled injury problems in each of his last three seasons, but provided the team with an inviting underneath target when healthy. At Eagle High School, Schouman earned All-Southern Idaho Conference first-team honors as a senior after catching 32 passes for 580 yards and seven touchdowns. He was named second-team All-Southern Idaho Conference following his junior season. He also lettered in track at Eagle High, and was a member of the All-Southern Idaho Academic Team as a junior and senior. Schouman enrolled at Boise State in 2003 and worked his way into the lineup, starting eight of 14 games. He ranked eighth on the team with 17 receptions for 272 yards (16.0 avg) and four touchdowns. He also made five touchdown-resulting blocks. In 2004, Schouman started the team's first five games and played in reserve during the final two contests. He missed midseason action after tearing two ligaments in his left knee against Brigham Young. He would finish the year with 15 catches for 284 yards (18.9 avg) and a pair of scores. He also recorded one solo tackle. As a junior, Schouman started 11 of 12 games, missing the regular season finale against Louisiana Tech after suffering a concussion against Idaho. He caught 17 passes for 177 yards (10.4 avg) and a touchdown while also making three solo tackles. Schouman's injury woes continued in 2006. Despite earning first-team All-Western Athletic Conference honors, he was bothered by hamstring problems to both legs early in the year, sitting out the Oregon State game. He was also hampered by a right shoulder sprain that required surgery after the season. He still managed to rank fourth on the team with 29 grabs for 276 yards (9.5 avg) and four touchdowns. He was also credited with five touchdown-resulting blocks. In 45 games at Boise State, Schouman started 35 times. He caught 78 passes for 1,009 yards (12.9 avg) and 11 touchdowns. He also recorded four solo tackles and posted 20 touchdown-resulting blocks.

positives

Has a solid, athletic frame with well-proportioned muscles, especially in his shoulders and arms...His frame is at maximum growth potential and lacks the size and bulk to play tight end, but with his experience blocking through the rush lanes and along the perimeter, he is a candidate to make a potential position switch to fullback...Used mostly on screens and dump-offs as a receiver and not much on other routes, but has the large hands and adjustment skills to catch outside his frame...Not a sudden mover off the snap, but shows good quickness stepping into his blocks and uses his hands effectively to beat the jam and get a good release into his routes...Stays low in his pads when used as a move-oriented tight end, showing good awareness and takes proper angles to neutralize second-level defenders...Squares his shoulders and keeps his head on a swivel when used as a lead blocker, doing a good job of widening the rush lanes...Does a nice job of sinking his hips and making sharp lateral cuts when used on controlled routes...Runs with a fluid stride, but is best when used on just short or intermediate routes...Is alert to pocket pressure, doing a good job of working back to the ball when the quarterback is in trouble...Has the tackling ability to play on the special teams coverage units...Shows the lower body strength to break single tacklers after the catch.

compares to

TONY RICHARDSON-Minnesota...Schouman won't be used in the traditional fullback mode, as he is a better blocker for the running game than in pass protection. He is an efficient short-area receiver who lacks the size to be a tight end, but his blocking skills are much more effective than a typical H-back. Durability issues will see him still on the draft boards until the later stages of the second day of the draft, but he has the athletic ability to contribute.

negatives

Lacks the size and bulk to play tight end at the next level...Has durability issues and is still recovering from 2006 shoulder surgery...Better blocker on the edge or leading through the holes, as the bigger defensive linemen have had success pushing him back into the pocket on the pass rush...Has good hands, but needs to improve his overall concentration, as he drops a few balls when he tries to run before securing it...Lacks the timed speed to be a decent deep threat and struggles to track the ball over his shoulder on long patterns...Has good hand strength, but tends to engage defenders too long in attempts to defeat the jam...His routes tend to drift when running long distances.

2004: Suffered a left knee medial collateral ligament and a posterior cruciate ligament tears vs. Brigham Young (9/24), sitting out the next five games vs. SMU, Tulsa, Fresno State, Hawaii and San Jose State. 2005: Sat out the regular season finale vs. Louisiana Tech after suffering a concussion vs. Idaho (11/19). 2006: Did not play vs. Oregon State (9/07) due to two hamstring strains. 2007: Underwent right shoulder surgery after the Fiesta Bowl.
