B.J. Catalon

KR, RB · Texas Christian
Catalon led the Horned Frogs in rushing as a freshman and sophomore and was TCU?s leading rusher prior to his 2014 concussion, leaving school with 3,034 career all-purpose yards. He thrived on zone-stretch runs and also worked between the tackles, but he won?t be able to take consistent abuse at the next level with his lack of size and power at the position. Catalon is balanced and versatile as a runner, receiver and return man, but the fumbling problems and concussion history are very bright red flags that could leave him undrafted ? if he stays healthy and there are no long-terms issues due to the concussions, he can contribute as a kick returner and part-time offensive weapon, but that?s a big ?if.?

strengths

Built close to the ground with a low center of gravity. Light-footed to work in tight spaces and easily redirect his momentum without slowing down in his cuts. Hides behind blockers with patient footwork to wait for his opening. Shifts gears effectively, popping it into fifth gear when he sees daylight. Improved run instincts to match his vision, weaving through the tall trees in the trenches. Impact value as a return man, averaging 27.7 yards per return at TCU, including a pair of touchdowns (36/997/27.7/2). Proven receiving option and ballskills with adequate hand size and length. Consistent production the past three years and led the team in total touchdown in 2014 (12).

weaknesses

Undersized frame and lacks the ideal build to take consistent punishment. Doesn?t have room to effectively carry 190+ pounds. Below average power and doesn?t deliver pop with his pads, struggling to create after initial contact. Unimpressive long-speed and can be caught from behind. Always has the end zone in mind and will bypass designed lanes to bounce runs outside, losing yards. Ball security is a red flag with eight career fumbles ? second-worst fumble rate in this draft class, fumbling every 47.0 offensive touches. Only 13 career starts and was never the bell-cow runner. Production dipped since his freshman season and recorded only three career 100-yard rushing games. Strong durability concerns due to his lack of size and concussion history, missing the final five games of his junior season (Nov. 2014).
