Jayden Daniels

UPDATES

Week 3: in 41-14 mauling of Mississippi State, Daniels showed he can throw every type of pass. He also rushed 15 times for 64 yards before he came out midway through the fourth quarter with the lead at 41-7.

Week 2:  In 72-10 win over Grambling, Daniels completed 18 of 24 for 269 yards and five touchdowns as LSU complemented that air game with 302 yards and five touchdowns rushing.

nWeek 1: In 42-24 loss to Florida State, Daniels dropped back 47 times, hit 22 of 37 passes for 346 yards and only one touchdown as he was sacked four times and took off on unplanned runs six times. Two passes were dropped and one batted down.

Week 0: DNP

OVERVIEW

Tempting talent whose versatile ability should transfer to a decent NFL career -- as a backup. Daniels can throw and run, but neither consistently nor well enough to be a a reliable starter in the pros.

After playing three seasons at and graduating from Arizona State. Daniels transferred to LSU last year and helped the Tigers to a 9-3 regular season that included a win over Alabama and propelled LSU to the SEC Championship Game. He threw for 2,774 yards on 373 attempts with a completion percent of 68.1 for an average of 7.4 yards per pass, with 16 TDs, while taking 45 sacks, and totaling a QB rating of 100.8. He added 143 runs for a total of 1,013 yards at an average of 7.1 per run.

However, backup QB Garrett Nussmeier won’t let Daniels rest. If the senior struggles, Nussmeier will be ready to pounce. How Daniels handles that heat will mean a lot for his NFL Draft prospects.

Prior to transferring to LSU in March, the QB played three seasons at Arizona State, throwing for 6,024 yards and 32 TDs against 13 interceptions.

ANALYSIS

Strengths:

Shows accuracy to all levels of the field and has arm strength to make every requisite NFL throw. Good zip and ball placement on the quick slant and nice touch down the seam and on the post-corner, so he can attack defenses vertically and horizontally.

Daniels must be accounted for when used in the read-option game. He is a loose-limbed, flexible athlete with speed to pick up yardage in scramble situations. Thin, athletic build with room for another 10-15 pounds of muscle.  Mobility makes him dangerous.

 Weaknesses:

Last season in a new system, Daniels struggled with his decision-making after the snap snap and needed to improve pre-snap recognition, especially against a blitzing defense. Slow reading progressions and was troubled by relatively simple coverage rotations. Doesn't decipher information as quickly as you would like, but does see the entire field and understands coverage. Daniels often holds the ball too long and while hekeeps his eyes up while moving, Daniels'  mechanics get increasingly sloppy after he is forced t move from his spot.

Before LSU: 4-star recruit out of San Bernardino, California. Born on December 18th, 2000. Started all four years at Cajon High School. Threw for over 14,000 yards and 170 touchdown passes. 3,645 rushing yards as well. Alumni of the Under Armour All-American game. Committed to Arizona State on December 13th, 2018. Started all but one game during his freshman campaign in 2019. Totaled 2,943 passing yards and a 17:2 TD:INT ratio. Added 335 rushing yards and three scores on the ground. Honorable Mention Pac-12 Offensive Player of the Year in 2019. During COVID-shortened 2020 campaign, started all four games. Was named to Davey O'Brien Award Watch List prior to the 2020 campaign. Transferred from Arizona State to LSU for the 2022 season.

FRANKLY:

Daniels wanted to enter the 2023 draft, but NFL scouting feedback gave him a low evaluation which is why he returned to college. He has athletic ability in is arm and legs, but needs to find the right system and teammates to be successful. Not a sure thing. Let's see how he does in 2023.
