Kevin Toliver II

Toliver arrived in Baton Rouge with sky-high expectations, but he was never able to reach those heights in his three seasons for the Tigers. After starting eight games as a true freshman, he notched only 10 starts combined the past two seasons as he was more of a part-time player in the LSU secondary. A five-star cornerback recruit out of high school, Kevin Toliver II put himself on the recruiting radar at a young age and started all four years at Trinity Christian. He was part of a loaded senior class at Trinity Christian that produced a remarkable 12 players who signed with FBS-level programs in the 2015 recruiting class, including 2018 NFL Draft prospects Jeff Holland (Auburn), Kendrick Norton (Miami) and Andre Smith (North Carolina). However, Toliver was the crown jewel. Toliver has an excellent blend of size, athleticism and ball skills with an understanding of how to create leverage in coverage, but he tends to rely more on natural ability than fundamentals. Although his scheme specific skill-set won’t be for everyone, he will appeal to press-heavy teams looking for a bully with the square, patient foundation to stay on top of routes. BACKGROUND Toliver, who was a consensus five-star recruit and considered one of the best prep cornerbacks in the country, originally verballed to LSU as a sophomore and despite heavy attention from programs like Florida State and Alabama, he stayed true to his LSU commitment. He enrolled early and quickly found the field as a true freshman (eight starts), recording 35 tackles, six passes defended and one interception in 2015. Toliver had his sophomore season cut short due to injury and finished with 21 tackles and one pass break-up in five starts. His playing time was reduced as a junior (five starts) and he finished with 28 tackles, 11 passes defended and one interception in 2017.

Toliver is dripping with natural ability and boasts the physical traits that will likely get him overdrafted, but he requires training wheels in the league to hone his skills and push him to his potential.

Plays tight, fearless coverage. Crowds the catch point and won’t concede anything. Long limbs to take away passing lanes (18 career passes defended). Efficient drive mechanics from off-coverage. Makes proper mid-game adjustments to better match patterns. Willing to stick his shoulder into the midsection of his target. Reserved, but mean-spirited and competes with a quiet confidence. weaknesses

Muddy feet and grabby hands at the top of routes. Explosive receivers won’t have an issue separating if he doesn’t make contact. Rigid hips hinder his redirection skills in tight spaces, losing balance. More build-up speed than instant burst. Technique-optional mentality. Picks and chooses his spots in run support and doesn’t always play up to his size. Stays glued to blocks on the perimeter. Suspended multiple times over his three years at LSU due to rules violations. Only started a combined 10 games the past two seasons.
