CFB Note - Navy Abey, Zach

WR Zach Abey started nine games at quarterback for Navy last season as a junior and rushed for 1,413 yards in the Midshipmen's triple-option attack. But when the post-spring depth chart was posted Monday, Abey was listed as a co-starter at wide receiver. Apparently Abey will still get some playing time at quarterback, but he is no longer the starter at that position, and coach Ken Niumataololo wants to get Abey on the field as much as possible. After a 6-6 regular season, including a loss to Army, Niumataololo announced before the Military Bowl that sophomore Malcolm Perry would be the starting quarterback. Perry had spent most of the 2017 season as a slotback. The move worked as Perry rushed 16 times for 114 yards and two touchdowns. Abey still got some time at quarterback, rushing for five touchdowns as Navy crushed Virginia 49-7. The Middies did not complete a pass in that game.
