Kyzir White

SS, OLB · West Virginia
Just like his older brothers, Kevin and Ka’Raun White, Kyzir White followed in their footsteps from Emmaus High to Lackawanna College to West Virginia. Except instead of staying at wide receiver like his brothers, White elected the defensive side of the ball and developed into an impact safety at the college level. A two-year starter at West Virginia, White arrived in Morgantown in 2016 and filled the shoes of KJ Dillon at the “Spur” position, a hybrid linebacker/safety role in the Mountaineers 3-3-5 base scheme. He lined up primarily near the line of scrimmage, covering the slot/tight end and leveraging vs. the run. White is a mean-spirited hunter and displays an understanding of football geometry, making him at-worst a core special teams player. Like most safeties, he is at his best with the play in front of him, but his NFL ceiling will hinge on his development in coverage. BACKGROUND White was a four-star JUCO recruit and had more options than either of his brothers with programs like USC, Penn State and Nebraska pursuing him hard. However, he decided to stay closer to home and kept the Lackawanna-to-West Virginia pipeline alive, committing to the Mountaineers. White was an ideal fit as the “Spur” defender in the WVU’s 3-3-5 base scheme and started immediately as a junior, posting 58 tackles, 7.0 tackles for loss and five passes defended in 2016. He started all 13 games as a senior and finished second on the team with 94 tackles and tied for first with three interceptions, earning Second Team All-Big 12 honors.

in our view

White has competitive make-up that NFL coaches will want to work with, but he has a tweener skill-set with average athletic and physical traits, creating scheme fit questions. His development in coverage will be the key to his NFL trajectory, but at-worst, he will make an impact on special teams.

strengths

NFL frame with growth potential and functional length. Aggressively attacks alleys, flying downhill with purpose. Leverages outside runs, shutting down the edges as a run defender. Accurately judges/manipulates space in pursuit. Physically takes on blocks. Maintains his balance to secure open-field tackles. Intense playing demeanor and looks for the jarring hit. Among the team leaders in special teams tackles the past two seasons. Light on his feet to match up with tight ends and backs in coverage. Opportunistic and plays with a “my ball” awareness in his drops. Played a hybrid role in college and was the coaches added extra helpings to his plate. Used often as a blitzer and got better and better in this area. Senior captain and injects energy to the rest of the defense, on and off the field. – Dane Brugler 2/7/2018

weaknesses

Has the accelerator and speed of a linebacker, not a safety. Athleticism lacks burst. Play strength doesn’t always match his intentions. Still figuring out how to best utilize his long arms to take on blocks. Inconsistent results when attempting to break down at top speed and tackle in motion. Overaggressive angles and needs to harness his eagerness to make the play. Could use more finesse to his man cover technique. Tight redirection movements vs. speedy targets. Played more of a linebacker role in college and lacks experience as a true safety. – Dane Brugler 2/7/2018

Played for Randy Cuthbert as a senior at Emmaus High and Coach Joe Bottiglieri his previous three years.
