Aaron Pettrey

K · Ohio State
Pettrey had a pretty good 2009 season going before New Mexico State came to town. He missed two 52-yard field goals badly (he made both of his other attempts from 50-plus yards last fall), then suffered a torn right (kicking) MCL on an unnecessary low block while covering a kickoff. He worked hard to return for the Buckeyes' Rose Bowl win over Oregon, making a 45-yard attempt. Pettrey contributed early in his career on placements and kickoffs as a redshirt freshman, when he went 55-for-58 on extra points and 8-for-11 on field-goals attempts with a long of 51 yards. In 2007 preseason practices, however, he suffered a hip flexor strain and lost the job to Ryan Pretorius. Pettrey got back on team's radars the following year by making seven of eight attempts as the long-range kicker, with a long of 54. His experience as a kickoff specialist may also intrigue teams. Although he forced only two touchbacks on 48 kickoffs in 2009, his 13 in 74 tries in 2008, six of 14 in 2007 and 37 of 64 in 2006 (when the ball was placed at the 35-yard line for kickoffs instead of the 30) are solid numbers. Injuries may be an issue, but doctors tell Pettrey his right knee may be stronger after the surgery than it was before. If that's true, teams will consider drafting him in the fifth or sixth round.

right-footed kicker. very good leg strength, making 53-55-yard field goals without losing a lot of trajectory because of his height and upright kicking style. minimum drift on his kicks, typically straight or slight draw. nice strike through the zone, but may need to speed up approach at the next level. generally good accuracy; missed a couple of short field-goal attempts that may not be a problem in the nfl because he would kick against less of an angle.

Nice trajectory on kickoffs, which allows the cover unit to get downfield. Can dribble onside kicks up the middle. May need work on more typical NFL high kick to the sideline.

2007: Suffered a hip flexor strain during preseason practices and lost the job to Ryan Pretorius. 2009: Suffered a torn right MCL against New Mexico State, sidelining him until the team's bowl game.
